Vestbygd: Coastal culture and nature on Lista
Accommodation in Vestbygd
Vestbygd lies by the sea on the flat part of Lista. The village brings together a maritime history and distinctive architectural and cultural landmarks; at the same time, the Besøkssenter våtmark Lista provides information about the wetland system. Here, you can find a range of themes to shape your stay on Lista around.
Coastal landscape and nature on Lista
Its seaside location and flat landscape give Vestbygd its own character. In Borhaug, the Besøkssenter våtmark Lista produces exhibitions and information resources, sharing knowledge about Lista’s wetland system. The centre offers a way to explore the region’s natural themes without relying on the landscape alone as a backdrop: information and learning are also part of what it offers.
The centre enables all visitors to experience nature, offers guidance on enjoying the natural environment, and encourages them to discover and explore Lista’s natural surroundings. This can provide a different focus for planning your trip than Vestbygd’s historic ships and buildings: nature themes sit alongside coastal culture here, rather than replacing it.
Ships and maritime history
At the Listeskøyta Kystkultursenter, visitors can go aboard the “Linda”, a ship built in 1907. The escape boat “VA-92L” from the Second World War is also on display. The exhibitions cover cargo shipping, fishing and shipwrecks. These themes give coastal culture a tangible form, ranging from work at sea to the risks of shipping.
The Lista Kystkultursenter in Borhaug presents the history of building Listerbåter and Listerkutteren. This boatbuilding tradition was practised on Lista for more than 100 years from 1850 onwards and spread along the Norwegian coast. Vestbygda, which includes Borhaug, is also shaped by boatbuilding and fishing. Maritime history is therefore not just an exhibition topic, but part of Vestbygda’s cultural character.
The chapel and earlier traces
The Vestbygda Chapel in Borhaug is a wooden long church built in 1909. Construction was completed as early as 1907, but because the altar area was missing, it could not initially be used for church services. It was not consecrated until 1909. This sequence of events makes its construction history particularly clear: completion and use for religious services did not coincide.
Another detail dates back to the construction period: on 14 November 1906, Provost Koren placed a sealed steel box beneath the tower. It contains a Bible, papers, chapel drawings and current coins, and remains untouched. Vestbygd also has Bronze Age royal burial mounds. Together, these traces offer different points of connection with the past, from prehistory to the origins of the chapel.
The wider destination: Farsund
The wider travel destination of Farsund includes other landscape attractions. The Listastrendene landscape protection area was established in 1987 to preserve a unique natural and cultural landscape with distinctive beach types and significant conservation value for geology, botany, zoology and cultural history. Lista’s wetland system is also part of the region’s natural heritage and received Ramsar status in 1996.
More than 400 bird species have been observed on Lista. The bird sanctuaries protect important stopover, breeding and wintering grounds. These regional natural attractions complement Vestbygd’s specific coastal and cultural stories with a broader view of Lista. When choosing a holiday rental, you can therefore first consider whether you are most interested in the local maritime history, the chapel heritage or the landscape and nature of the Farsund destination.
