Kviteseid combines a distinctive lake landscape with cultural discoveries and activities on the water. At Lake Nisser, steep mountains and a striking landscape of islands shape the scenery. From Roholtsfjell, the view extends across much of West Telemark to the mountains of Hardangervidda and Gausta. The lakes Vråvatn and Nisser, as well as the Bandak waterway system, are also part of this panorama. If you are deciding what to focus on during your holiday, Kviteseid offers a choice of water-based experiences, trails and historic sites.

Cultural sites with a history of their own

At Kviteseid bygdetun, you can encounter a long history: it was founded in 1907. Its buildings include Tveitloftet, which dates from before the Black Death. In Kviteseid gamle kyrkje, a stone church from the late 12th century, the ceiling is particularly striking. Its 20 panels were painted by Thomas Blix in 1714. If you are interested in historic buildings and their design, you will find specific details here that differ from the landscape and activities by the lake.

Utsondhalli also focuses on a single person: it presents the sculptor Gunnar Utsond. Kviteseid municipality also has a nature and cultural trail with 18 information boards. These themes can be considered as a separate focus when planning your holiday—for example, if you would like to explore cultural history as well as nature.

Trails and outdoor experiences

Kviteseid offers several options for a hike. Vandre Telemark has well-marked hiking trails in several places in West Telemark, so the selection in Kviteseid can be a starting point if you would also like to explore the area on foot. A special destination in Morgedal is Øverbø, the birthplace of Sondre Norheim. The route there is signposted and is part of VandreTelemark. This gives you different options for planning your day: a hike along a marked trail or a visit to a place connected with Norheim’s life story.

Morgedal is also home to Vassparken. The site features a 45-metre-long model of the Morgedalsvassdraget. Children can play at floating logs down the water and generating electricity. If you are travelling with children, you can include this playful introduction to water and energy as a separate item in your holiday plans. Fossøy also has a 9-hole golf course by Lake Nisser.

Water, the cycling route and choosing your holiday focus

From Kviteseidbyen, boats can travel along the canal through several locks. National Cycle Route 2 also runs along the canal from Kviteseidbyen. If you would particularly like to centre your days around the canal or cycling, these two options may influence your choice of base. For a holiday by the lake, Vrådal is a useful point of reference: this part of Lake Nisser is particularly suitable for paddling. In the centre of Vrådal, a large car park and a boat slipway are located directly below the grocery store.
