Vrådal between the lake, locks and nature
Accommodation in Vrådal
In Vrådal, experiences on the water meet a distinctive history of locks and nature around Lake Nisser. You can get to know the area from a boat, learn more about the former boat traffic and timber floating, or explore the nature and cultural trail on Fossøy. Vrådal offers different ways to shape your vacation: active time on the water, culture and history, or activities on land.
Experience Vrådal from the water
In Vrådal, you can swim, row, canoe and kayak; boats can be rented at several locations. The tourist information office in the town centre rents out boats, kayaks and canoes. It also has a dedicated gallery featuring works by Louis Moe. There is also a large car park in the centre; the boat launch is below the grocery store.
The excursion boat M/S Fram offers a special perspective on the waterways: the two-hour lock cruise passes the Slusemuseet and the hand-operated Småstraum lock. The veteran boat also runs excursions through the islands at the upper end of Lake Nisser. If you are planning a vacation with boat trips and water sports, these options offer different ways to experience the lake and its surroundings.
Straand Summerland is right on the lakeshore. Its facilities include a playground, a beach, boat rental, beach volleyball and a summer café. The combination of water and land-based activities makes it another place to visit during a day in Vrådal; for families, the playground is an additional, practical stop.
The history of the locks and discoveries on Fossøy
The Slusemuseet is located by the Småstraum lock. It explores the history of Northern Europe's highest standing locks, boat traffic on Vråvatn and Lake Nisser around the turn of the 20th century, as well as timber floating and lock construction. Together with the hand-operated lock, the museum makes the technical and economic history of Vrådal's waterways a focus of a visit.
Fossøy also brings together its own landscape history and cultural themes: the island was formed during the last Ice Age and bears clear traces of kettle holes. There are 18 information boards along the Fossøy nature and cultural trail. They cover, among other things, Straumsnes School, the Slusemuseet and the Småstraum lock. As you explore Fossøy, you can discover both geological traces and stories from the surrounding area.
Sølvsmedtunet has a shop selling traditional and modern jewellery, handicrafts and souvenirs. Eventyrsølvet is made from Sterling 925S in the workshop. This adds an insight into local handicrafts to the nature and water experiences; jewellery and souvenirs offer a different focus from the historical themes of the Slusemuseet.
Cycling, golf and winter activities
For cyclists, HUB Riding offers the Straand Hotel as a base for a variety of routes during your stay. There are ten different cycling routes to choose from. Fossøy also has a golf course, where you can play golf in a landscape surrounded by Lake Nisser. These activities appeal to different interests: choosing a cycling route or spending time on the golf course in the lake's surroundings.
Vrådal Panorama Skisenter has a children's area for sledding and ski games. The two conveyor belts have a combined length of 100 metres. If you are travelling with children and planning winter activities, you can include this area as a separate activity. Unlike the boat trips, golf course and cycling routes, the focus here is on sledding and play.
These different experiences give you concrete points to consider when choosing Vrådal as a destination to suit your interests.
