Gaustatoppen reaches 1,883 metres above sea level; at the same time, the experiences described here range from a historic escape route to a cross-country ski trail. Mountain destinations and views
The Gaustabanen takes visitors to the summit of Gaustatoppen in 15 minutes. If you are planning a visit, you can treat the mountain railway ride as an experience in its own right. Another viewpoint is Gvepseborg: The upper station of the Krossobanen is 886 metres above sea level and offers views of the mountain landscape around Rjukan. This gives you a choice of different elevations and perspectives, without implying that they are part of the same route or a combined excursion.
The Sun Mirror is also accessible from Gvepseborg via a walking trail. The route is 2.8 kilometres long and takes about an hour each way. These details give you a specific reference point for planning your day. If you are travelling with children, Gjuvhovda offers a short, family-friendly hike with views from the summit.
Trails and stories around Rjukan
Ryes vei combines a specific route description with a chapter in Vemork’s history. The trail is four kilometres long, runs below the Krossobanen and has 21 hairpin bends and a total elevation gain of 500 metres. Norwegian resistance fighters used it as an escape route on the night of the attack on the Vemork heavy water plant. It is also known as The Retreat. If you are interested in this story, the Heavy Water Cellar at the original site features an interactive exhibition about the sabotage mission against heavy water production.
You can also combine a visit to the Vemork Museum with a walk: It is about 800 metres from the car park to the museum, a walk of approximately 20 minutes. The Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum (NIA) aims to preserve and share the local history of hydropower, industry and society. Another historical perspective is offered by the Rjukan Railway, which offers travel experiences and historical guided tours in summer. These experiences focus on different aspects—from the story of a single trail to broader themes in the region’s industrial history.
The historic surroundings also include Mæl railway station and its ferry site. Together, they form a protected cultural heritage park with a fully preserved station environment, distinctive buildings, and historic freight and passenger carriages. If you would like to include places like these in your trip, you can devote some of your days to transport and industrial history as well as mountain destinations.
Active days and seasonal offerings
For cross-country skiing, Tinnløypa is a clearly defined option: The trail runs for 29 kilometres from Gvepseborg to Atrå. This makes it very different from shorter walking options, such as the hike on Gjuvhovda or the trail to the Sun Mirror. Ryes vei, by contrast, is characterised by its hairpin bends and elevation gain. When choosing a holiday rental, you can use these different activities as a guide and prioritise the experiences you prefer during your stay.
In summer, Sandviken Camping in Tinn Austbygd offers canoe and kayak rentals. It also has a beach that is open to visitors who are not staying at the campsite, as well as a café. For lunch or a coffee break in Vemork, different opening times apply: Café Vemork serves lunch, coffee and cake from 1 June to 1 November during museum opening hours. From 2 November to 31 May, it is closed and opens only for pre-booked group meals.
Getting around between destinations
Bus services connect Rjukan with several villages; during the high season, there is also a service between Rjukan and Gausta. In 2026, the free Fjellbussen runs from Rjukan to Gausta and on to the Gaustabanen and Stavsro from 26 June to 11 October. There are additional departures during the high season.
