Nature and activities by the water
Grønneset offers opportunities for swimming, walking, fishing, ball games and barbecuing. The range of options extends from outdoor activities to relaxing hours by the lake. If you’d like to include a variety of activities in your trip, Skaun has a total of 46 fishing waters. Fishing on Lake Laugen is usually done from a boat. Ice fishing is possible there from around Christmas and continues as long as there is ice in spring.
Buvikfjæra offers a different kind of nature experience: this relatively undisturbed delta and foreshore area has a high density of birds and is important for wintering birds as well as a stopover site during spring and autumn migration. Saltnesstranda in Buvika also offers a setting of its own for spending time outdoors. The area is accessible year-round and has a gravel path, benches and lawns.
Leisure fishing, swimming, hiking, boating and camping are among the activities available in the Ølsholmskjæret outdoor recreation area. If you’re interested in a winter trip, you could also consider Ølshøgda: at 537 metres above sea level, it is the highest point in Skaun. The area is considered snow-reliable and may be among the first places in Trøndelag to offer groomed ski trails at the start of the winter season.
Hikes and pilgrim trails
The municipal hiking guide “På tur i Skaun” features 41 suggested hikes. The Gudbrandsdalsleden is also of interest to pilgrims: the trail is marked with wooden posts, enamel signs and pilgrim symbols. It leads to the centre of Buvika, where it follows a pedestrian and cycle path. The pilgrim route through Skaun is 26 km long—a distance to bear in mind when planning your trip.
Churches, history and museums
Among the notable historic sites is Skaun Church at Venn, a medieval stone church dating from around 1180. In Husaby, the outline of a manor church built around 1040 and a memorial stone to Einar Tambarskjelve have been preserved. Four standing stones stand at Naustan in Børsa; they are featured as a symbol in Skaun municipality’s coat of arms. In Viggja, a memorial stone commemorates the Battle of Vigg in 1095. It was erected on 17 May 1896.
Skaun also has a rich history of technology: Piene Mølle was completed in 1878 and was Norway’s first roller mill. It is considered an important part of the country’s technological history and is a landmark in Buvika, on the coast and along the shipping route towards the Orkdalsfjord and Gaulosen. Buvik Church, meanwhile, stands out for its octagonal floor plan; its pulpit is located above the altar.
The Skreddarhaugen Museum displays around 800 objects, including items related to shoemaking and a local history exhibition focused on the Middle Ages. The museum is listed as open on Sundays from 12:00 to 16:00 during the summer season. Råbygda School Museum preserves a school building erected in 1878 at its original location. It includes a classroom, a teacher’s residence and outbuildings. Visitors are received there by prior arrangement.
Every year, Skaun hosts the cultural event Kristin på Husaby. The programme includes theatre performances, a literature seminar, a march, exhibitions, church concerts and an ecumenical service, among other events.
