Holtålen offers a wide range of reasons to visit: mountain hikes and nature experiences around Hessdalen, winter activities in several places, as well as museums and historical sites. This variety gives you the flexibility to choose the focus of your stay based on the interests of your travel companions. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether you want to focus on nature and outdoor activities, culture, or a winter holiday.

Hessdalen: Nature and a range of experiences

Hessdalen is a gateway to the Øyungen protected landscape area and a starting point for several mountain hikes in the northeastern part of Forollhogna National Park. This makes it possible to combine a visit with a stay where the mountain landscape and hiking play an important role. There are also guided hikes and horseback riding. If you are looking for a different experience, Hessdalen also offers UFO safaris and experiences at a mountain summer farm (seter).

At the entrance to Hessdalen, Hessdalskjølen has an information point about the valley and the Hessdalen phenomenon. It provides a place to learn more about the valley and this special topic. Nature, guided activities and the Hessdalen phenomenon are all available here; when planning your trip, you can decide which of these aspects is most interesting to your group.

Winter in Holtålen

For alpine skiing, Ålen has a modern ski facility with several runs of varying difficulty. In Holtålen, there are also groomed cross-country ski trails in several locations throughout the winter. The offerings differ in type: downhill runs are available alongside trails for cross-country skiing. For your winter trip, you can consider which kind of activity in the snow you would like to focus on.

Another option is Gauldalsløypa, a recreational snowmobile route connecting Holtålen and Tydal. Haltdalen also has a new roller-ski facility.

Museums and historical sites

The Ålen local history museum comprises 12 buildings and around 2,500 objects. The Eggen farm includes, among other things, a main building dating from the early 18th century. The number of buildings, the approximate size of the collection and the historic main building offer several concrete points of interest: you can explore both the collection and the older buildings.

Haltdalen also brings together a range of cultural sites. Gammelgården is the restored former rectory of Haltdalen, where visitors are welcomed for refreshments and guided tours. The new stave church of Haltdalen was built there and completed in 2004. It offers major musical, cultural and spiritual experiences. There is also a separate cultural trail by the ruins of the Eidet smeltehytte.

The Armfeldtleden commemorates around 3,500 Swedish soldiers who lost their lives in the mountains of Holtålen and Tydalen. It offers a historical perspective on a solemn memory associated with this mountain region. If you want to include culture and history alongside outdoor activities in your trip, the museum, rectory, stave church and cultural trail can appeal to different interests.

Choosing a place to stay and getting around

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can use the different places and experiences to guide you towards the focus that suits your trip. Hessdalen is associated with mountain hikes, Øyungen and the activities offered there; in Ålen, you will find the local history museum and alpine ski facility, while Haltdalen offers its own points of interest with Gammelgården, the stave church and the roller-ski facility. The mountain boards (Fjellstyrene) of Haltdalen and Ålen also manage eight open mountain cabins.

Ålen railway station is a stop in Holtålen on the Røros Line. Trains run from there towards Trondheim S, Røros, Hamar and Oslo S. This may be relevant when planning your arrival if you want to take train connections into account. Places within Holtålen include Renbygda, Haltdalen and Ålen.

Fishing is another possible focus: in the Gaula, salmon fishing is possible in Holtålen between Dragåsen in Haltdalen and Eggafossen in Svølgja. Half of the Gaula flowing through Holtålen is accessible to salmon. This information provides a concrete reference for planning your trip if you are interested in fishing.
