Storfosna
Accommodation in Storfosna
Storfosna combines striking island contrasts with traces of nature and culture: the island consists of two islands connected by a tidal area. Nearby, you’ll also find the Kråkvågsvaet bird sanctuary, a coastal cycling loop and historic sites on Storfosna. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment for your vacation, these varied highlights provide a concrete starting point for deciding what you’d like to discover on your trip.
Island contrasts and birdlife
The two islands are markedly different: Fosenheia is hilly, with its highest point reaching 158 metres above sea level. Storfosna, by contrast, is flat and fertile. This contrast shapes the landscape of the island group as described, without requiring a long list of individual attractions.
The Kråkvågsvaet bird sanctuary is nearby. It is the strait between Kråkvåg and Storfosna and includes tidal flats and shallow-water areas. Since 24 July 1985, Kråkvågsvaet has held Ramsar status as part of the Ørlandet wetland system. Those interested in coastal landscapes and birdlife will find a distinct natural highlight here, alongside the islands’ hilly and flat terrain.
General access to the bird sanctuary is permitted. However, there are exceptions to protect nesting birds: access to the islets and the northern tip of Storfosna is restricted from 25 April to 15 July. Keep these location and date details in mind if your travel plans include excursions in the area. A small birdwatching hut just outside Kråkvågsvaet is used by ornithologists and school classes.
Cycling across Storfosna
The coastal Island Hopping Route Orkland–Ørland cycling loop passes through Storfosna. It is presented as a cycling tour for active families and other outdoor enthusiasts. One suggested route takes cyclists from Leksa via Storfosna and Garten to Brekstad; from there, the ferry takes them back to Valset. You can factor the places mentioned and the ferry crossing into your plans if cycling is to be the focus of your trip. Further details about route length or cycling time are not included in this route description.
Cultural heritage on the island
Storfosen gods is a large farm in Ørland municipality in Trøndelag. It is located on the island of Storfosna, north of the mouth of the Trondheimsfjord. The ruins of a 13th-century church can be found at Storfosen gods. This historic church site offers a different focus for exploration from the tidal flats and cycling route.
The name Storfosna kirke is also part of the area’s cultural history: the Storfosna chapel was renamed Storfosna kirke. This gives you a choice between active days on the cycling loop, an interest in nature at the bird sanctuary, and exploring historic traces. Coop Marked Storfosna is also among the shopping options in Ørland.
