Brekstad
Accommodation in Brekstad
Brekstad combines a beach in the heart of town with cultural attractions and trails through a landscape where wetlands and birdlife play a special role. This gives you a clear choice when planning your holiday: Would you like to spend time by the water, visit exhibitions and cultural venues, or explore Brekstad on foot? The different options can help you decide what best suits your trip and your choice of holiday apartment.
Beach and wetlands
Bystranda is in the centre of Brekstad, right next to the Ørland Cultural Centre. The beach is partly sandy, and the water is shallow. If you want to make time by the water the focus of your stay, this is a convenient beach option in the heart of town. The Ørland Wetland Visitor Centre adds the natural environment of the wetlands to the picture: it offers exhibitions and guided excursions. The centre also hosts themed evenings. As one of Norway’s six authorised wetland centres, it offers a distinctive focus among the visitor attractions in Brekstad.
You can also encounter the wetlands on the Ørland Coastal Pilgrim Trail. The hiking route leads from the express boat terminal in Brekstad to Austråttborgen and passes the Hovsfjæra Ramsar site along the way. This internationally protected wetland is known for its rich birdlife. If you are interested in birds and nature, you can plan a detour to a birdwatching tower along the route, where you can experience both at close range.
Culture at the Ørland Cultural Centre
The Ørland Cultural Centre houses Galleri Hans and the Hannah Ryggen Centre. Exhibitions at Galleri Hans change regularly. Another exhibition, “Gateway to Trøndelag”, is on the second floor of the cultural centre in Brekstad. You can therefore shape your cultural visit in different ways: see the changing gallery exhibitions or include an exhibition titled “Gateway to Trøndelag” in your plans.
The cultural centre also houses a cinema and a library, and is in the same building as a transport terminal. The Ørland Wetland Visitor Centre is also located in the Ørland Cultural Centre: you’ll find it at Rådhusgata 6, 7130 Brekstad. The different facilities are all in one building, with offerings ranging from exhibitions and guided excursions to a cinema and library.
Exploring on foot
The Ørland Coastal Pilgrim Trail gives an excursion from Brekstad a clear destination: the hiking route leads from the express boat terminal to Austråttborgen. The destination is about 4 km on foot from Brekstad. This approximate distance is a useful guide if you would like to include a walking excursion in your day’s plans. It does not, by itself, indicate how long the walk takes or what the trail is like.
For a different walking option, a marked trail leads back to Brekstad from Rusasetvatnet, following the Balsnes watercourse. This route offers another named starting point and course in addition to the route to Austråttborgen. Ørland Church is also nearby; it is Fosen’s only intact medieval stone church. The church is about 1.5 km on foot from Brekstad. Comparing this with the roughly 4 km to Austråttborgen can help you make a general choice, without specifying a walking time.
Which focus suits your trip?
If you’d like to combine the beach with attractions in the town centre, Bystranda is a useful reference point when searching for a holiday apartment in Brekstad. Those interested in culture can include the galleries, the “Gateway to Trøndelag” exhibition and the wetland visitor centre in their travel plans. If you prefer exploring on foot, the Coastal Pilgrim Trail to Austråttborgen, the path along the Balsnes watercourse and the short walk to Ørland Church offer several different options. Brekstad is accessible by scheduled boat service from Trondheim. When choosing your accommodation, you can first decide whether the beach, culture, nature or a hike should be the deciding factor.
