Austrått: Cultural Landscape and History
Nature and historical land use come together in the Austråttlunden Landscape Protection Area. This species-rich deciduous forest, with large oaks and distinctive plant and animal life, was once the hunting grounds and manor park of Austråttborgen. A constructed walking trail is 3.5 kilometres long. You can plan a visit to the forest as an outing in its own right and discover its history alongside the region’s nature attractions.
Austråttborgen is one of Norway’s oldest manor houses and is considered a European cultural treasure. Austrått Fort offers a different historical perspective: it is a former German fortification with a five-storey gun turret. The fort offers a guided tour lasting just under an hour, underground through the entire gun turret, the power station and the barracks, which could accommodate up to 200 people. The fort also houses the “Fosen Krigshistoriske Samlinger” exhibition about the years of occupation in Fosen. The history of the manor and the occupation period are thus different themes to choose from for cultural outings.

In Brekstad, the “Porten til Trøndelag” exhibition is on the second floor of the Ørland Kultursenter. It presents the long history of Ørland municipality—from the first people to visit Klakken 10,000 to 11,000 years ago to the present day. The same cultural centre has a dedicated gallery for Hannah Ryggen; the local transport terminal is also housed under the same roof. KULMIN complements these cultural themes with short video stories about Klüwerrøysa, Skjegghaugan, Viklem and Valseide. Text, sound, film and images, as well as new technology, are used to share Ørland’s cultural heritage.
For active days, the cycling route near Austrått along Fitjanveien follows a paved path beside the sea, with a firm or gravel surface. The “Fuglesafari” cycling route passes through Ørland’s wetlands, combining cycling with an interest in nature and birdlife. If you are looking for another activity, Ørland Diskgolfpark at Lerberen in Brekstad has an 18-hole course; the facility was established in 2018. In the historic area of Austrått, the Austrått Golf Club also operates a nine-hole golf course.
Tarva offers another distinctive experience: the island group includes more than 300 islands and islets and is a coastal cultural landscape maintained through livestock farming. A marked hiking trail, the Kystpilgrimsleden Ørland, passes through important natural and cultural areas and is suitable for visitors and local residents.
