Brønnøy: Torghatten, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Brønnøy
Torghatten, with its hole running right through it, the vast landscapes of Lomsdal-Visten National Park and museums devoted to regional history give Brønnøy a varied character. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you mainly want to hike, explore nature or learn about the local culture. These priorities offer different points of reference when choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home.
Landscape and hiking
In Lomsdal-Visten National Park, the landscape ranges from the coast and seashore through cultivated landscapes and forests to the mountains. The flora and fauna are diverse and rich in species. Those looking for longer excursions will often find challenging hikes through varied landscapes there. At the same time, the park has few facilities to support hiking. This combination is an important difference from an outing focused on a single viewpoint or a shorter experience.
Nevernes is the municipality of Brønnøy’s access point to the national park. At Nevernes Havn, there is an information exhibition established in collaboration with the municipality, featuring around 40 exhibits about Lomsdal-Visten National Park. A hiking trail from Nævernes Gaard leads to a viewpoint overlooking the park. This offers different ways to engage with the landscape: learning about nature or walking to a viewpoint.
Experience Torghatten in different ways
On the island of Torget stands the 258-metre-high Torghatten: a hat-shaped mountain with a hole running right through it. It is considered the municipality’s main attraction. The path through Torghatten is designated a National Tourist Hike and is well developed for hikers of all ages. If you would rather explore the area by bike, you can plan a ride to Torghatten that starts in central Brønnøysund and crosses the Brønnøy Bridge.
There is also a distinct type of excursion on the water: the Torghatten RIB trip starts at Kongebrygga quay in Brønnøysund and lasts about an hour and a half. The hiking trail, bike ride and RIB trip are clearly different experiences. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide which of these activities particularly interests you, rather than trying to fit them all into a single day’s itinerary.
History and regional culture
Brønnøy Church dates back to the Middle Ages and is a protected heritage site. After restoration, it reopened in 2008. Tilrem is also home to a medieval church and a historic marketplace. These places offer different ways to explore Brønnøy’s cultural history.
Velfjord Bygdemuseum presents the farming, fishing and South Sámi cultures of Brønnøy and Velfjord. It also illustrates life on a farm in the 18th and 19th centuries. Minnetun is home to a South Sámi kåte, also called a derhvie-gåetie. Velfjord Museum uses a former supermarket building in Hommelstø for exhibitions and events; there is also a café and new shops there.
Another focus on history can be found at Nevernes Havn: a war museum there houses Leif Torp’s collections. This collection is considered one of the largest private collections of military equipment in Norway. Those interested in different aspects of regional history can explore it alongside the insights into farming, fishing and South Sámi culture.
Garden and getting there
Hildurs Urterarium offers a self-guided tour through a garden in the coastal surroundings of Brønnøysund. Its themed areas include a biblical garden, poisonous plants, and useful, culinary and medicinal herbs. This is a different way to explore the area than going on a longer hike or visiting the museums.
Hurtigruta calls at Midthavna harbour in Brønnøysund. Brønnøysund harbour also offers connections to regional and national destinations by bus, train, plane and coastal express. This information can help you consider travel to the area as a separate part of your trip planning, while choosing accommodation based on the experiences that interest you most in Brønnøy.
