Fauske offers an unusual range of hiking and cultural themes. In the municipality, trails run along the coast, through forests and up to the highest peaks. Farms, museums and mining sites tell different chapters of the region’s story. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, you can base your choice on whether nature experiences, history or getting your bearings in town should be the focus of your stay.

Hiking between the coast, forests and peaks

The hiking terrain in Fauske is suitable year-round and ranges from afternoon outings and exercise walks to weekend hikes and long-distance hikes. The designated hiking destinations also vary in terrain: there are short walks on prepared trails as well as routes over more challenging ground. When planning your day, you can consider what kind of route suits your plans rather than treating all hiking destinations as similar outings.

When travelling with children, you can also take these distinctions into account when choosing a day’s destination together, without assuming that a particular route is suitable for every age. The coastal trails, forest paths and peak destinations offer different ways to experience the landscape within the municipality.

In the centre of Fauske, the promenade runs along the entire coastline. It is an area for peace, relaxation and experiences. In addition to coastal hikes, the centre’s own stretch of coastline can serve as a point of reference when considering the town and its waterfront location as part of your trip.

Farm history and regional culture

Sjønstå gård is a listed cluster farmstead dating from the 17th century. A bookable guided tour explores the farm’s history from its beginnings in 1665, through its time as a fishing and farming homestead and the transition to industry, up to the present day.

At Fauske bygdetun, the history of Salten is told through clothing. Three different guided tours can also be booked there. An exhibition about local healer Johannes Brateng adds another person from the area’s history to the bygdetun’s themes. Those interested in regional history will find both an overview of Salten and a specific exhibition topic here.

Mining is also one of Fauske’s distinctive themes. At Sulitjelma besøksgruve, an original mine locomotive travels 1.6 kilometres into the Sulitjelmafjell mountains. Sulitjelma gruvemuseum is located in Sulitjelma’s first industrial area. Together, the two sites provide historical and industrial context for mining in Sulitjelma. At Klungset leir, a memorial site recounts the occupation and the prisoners of war. The Klungset hospital is one of the few intact German medical facilities still preserved in Norway.

Mountain landscapes and getting your bearings

Junkerdal National Park is a mountain area in the municipalities of Saltdal and Fauske. Fauske marble also shapes the region’s place-name associations: it is found in and around the municipality of Fauske in northern Norway, north of the Arctic Circle. Along with the hiking trails, this shows how closely mountains and landscape are tied to finding your way around the region, without having to combine all the destinations into a single route.

For travel planning, it is useful to distinguish between the town and the municipality as separate reference points. The E6 runs north–south through the municipality of Fauske and through the town of Fauske. The Nordland Line runs through the town of Fauske. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether the town itself or another part of the municipality better suits your travel plans; these route descriptions do not indicate specific distances to individual destinations.

For a broader overview, you can also consider the places Tverrå, Brekke, Sulitjelma, Straumsnes and Valnesfjord, in addition to Fauske.

For an overview of the wider area: Nordland.
