Tosbotnet – Hiking in the North of the Tosenfjord
Accommodation in Tosbotnet
Tosbotnet lies in the north of the Tosenfjord and offers a special starting point for hikes to Bjørnstokkvatnan. The ascent from Tosbotn to the lakes gains 340 metres in elevation. Whether you are looking for a hike with mountain views or are interested in historical traces in the area, the landscape and its trails give your trip different focal points. When choosing your holiday accommodation, it is worth first considering which of these experiences appeal to you most.
Mountain Views and Special Places by the Water
From Upper Bjørnstokkvatnet, the view extends south to distant mountains and north to Breidvasstinden. The lake is therefore a destination for anyone who would like to set aside time during a hike to take in the surrounding landscape.
Large rock overhangs lie north of Upper Bjørnstokkvatnet. They were once used as dwellings and together provide sleeping space for around 10 to 15 people. The overhangs thus tell the story of an earlier use of the landscape. Those interested in the history of human settlements will find a different way to connect with the area here than on a hike whose main goal is the mountain views.
Hiking Trails with Different Levels of Difficulty
The trail from Tosbotn is signposted and cleared as far as Nedre Bjørnstokkvatnet. This gives you clear guidance if you choose the lakes as your hiking destination. At the same time, the trail from Tosbotn towards Lomsdalen is marked with cairns in some sections and can be difficult to find in places. Take this difference in trail descriptions into account when deciding which hike suits your group and your navigation needs.
From Bjørnstokkvatnan, hikers can walk across easy terrain towards Breivatnan and continue to Tettingsdalen, Strompdal, or Lomsdalen. Lomsdalen is a long day hike from Tosbotn. These details describe different options: you can make the ascent to the lakes your destination or consider the routes that continue beyond them. When planning for Lomsdalen, take into account that it is classed as a long day hike.
Historical Traces in the Area
The Bjørnstokken–Strompdalen route, which runs near Tosbotn, leads to an old bridle path. It was built in the 1920s as relief work. This history gives the path its own cultural significance: alongside the landscape, you will also encounter evidence of work from an earlier time. The rock overhangs and the bridle path represent different historical aspects of the area; they do not need to be combined into a single circular route or shared hike.
Which Accommodation Suits Your Trip?
Tosbotn Camping offers comfortable cabins with one, two, or three bedrooms, as well as pitches for motorhomes, caravans, and tents. The different numbers of bedrooms give you a specific point of reference when considering a cabin; pitches for different types of camping are also available. This lets you base your accommodation choice on the type of stay you have in mind, without treating the different forms of overnight accommodation as interchangeable.
