Coastal Scenery and Fishing Traditions

Set by the water, Vesterålen Rorbuer offers sweeping views across Straumsjøen, with mountains in the background. It consists of original fishing cabins built in the 18th and 19th centuries. The history of fishing is also present here: Damperiet Bryggekafé is housed in a former fish-oil processing building next to the fishing cabins.

Eagles are also part of the distinctive landscape. There are two eagle nests in Straumsjøen; it is not uncommon to see eagles gliding on the wind in front of Vesterålen Rorbuer. Here, water, mountains and glimpses of wildlife come together, while the old cabins recall their former use by fishermen.

Paths Between Farms, Beaches and Peaks

Kyststien, also known as Dronningstien, leads from the fishing cabins to Spjelkvågen and is just under 10 kilometres long. Along the way, it passes abandoned traditional farms, glacial potholes, white beaches and a lighthouse. The route therefore offers several different kinds of scenery along a single path. Those interested in coastal history and geological formations will find both here, alongside stretches of beach and the lighthouse.

From Vesterålen Rorbuer, you can set out on summit hikes to Vikantinden, Burnestinden and Nattmålstinden right from your doorstep. For a different route, Handkleppan lies outside Straumsjøen: from there, a path runs through the valley around Vikanfjellet. It has a detour to Åsanden; on the return, it follows the coast to Vikan. Kyststien and the path at Handkleppan thus differ in their described landmarks and routes, while the summit hikes have their own destinations.

Paddling and Fishing

You can kayak directly from the coast in Straumsjøen. However, the sea can be rough outside the bay, so this activity is recommended for experienced paddlers. SUP boards and kayaks can also be rented at Damperiet Bryggekafé. If you include these experiences in your trip plans, bear in mind the note about the sea outside the bay.

Fishing is another option: the managed fishing area of the Straume watercourse includes the western branch between Straumsjøen and Høgmyra, north of Straume. Season permits, day permits and youth permits allow fishing throughout the Straume watercourse. Varpa is a separate zone where only day permits are valid. Anglers should therefore distinguish between the rules for the entire Straume watercourse and the special provision for Varpa.

Local Cuisine

In July, Damperiet Bryggekafé offers a summer menu featuring short transport distances. It includes fish and meat dishes, light meals and baked goods. Ingredients come from Norwegian farms and local producers, including fish from Bø, cheese made in Bø, and bacon or cured meats from local farmers in Bø. The café also serves, among other things, lunch dishes, cured meats and bacalao.

The cuisine at Ringstad Resort is also based on local ingredients and inspired by local food traditions as well as international influences. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Straumsjøen, the range of experiences can help guide your choice: coastal paddling, walks through the landscape, summit hikes and fishing each offer a different focus for your stay.
