Bø combines a long coastline shaped by fjords with steep mountains, beaches and sites of cultural and historical interest. It is also home to bird cliffs and wetlands. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Bø, you can plan your trip around a wide range of interests, such as coastal landscapes, archaeological sites, or art and traditions.

Coastal Landscapes Between Mountains and Beaches

Bø’s coastline is 294 kilometres long and deeply indented by fjords. In the northwest and east in particular, steep, rugged mountains shape the landscape. At the same time, Bø encompasses open sea coast, sheltered skerry landscapes, white sandy beaches, alpine peaks, bird cliffs and wetlands. These contrasts give the region more than one coastal character: whether you prefer mountain, beach or open-coast views, a different side of Bø awaits you.

The Nyke/Tussen Nature Reserve protects one of Nordland’s largest and most geomorphologically well-developed shingle beaches. It includes a continuous 3.5 km stretch of shingle beach. Fjærvollstranda is an 800-metre-long beach by the road. At 1,870 metres, Svinøyvalen is Bø’s longest beach; it is so shallow that you can wade across to the island of Svinøya. These three beach descriptions showcase different coastal landforms and offer practical guidance if you’d like to focus your stay on either a shingle beach or a shallow beach.

A large heron colony is found in a plantation at Fagerhaugtvatnet. If you’re interested in wildlife and nature, this offers a glimpse of Bø’s animal life alongside its coast and mountains.

Art, History and Places to Explore

In Vinjesjøen, the open-air gallery features all 36 sculptures from the Skulpturlandskap Nordland project; admission is free. The sculpture “Mannen fra havet” is also located there. It’s about a 400-metre walk from the car park. Art lovers can include these two specific reasons to visit Vinjesjøen in their travel plans.

Bø Church contains five late-medieval Lübeck sculptures. There is ample parking at the church, as well as wheelchair access, an induction loop and toilets, including an accessible toilet. For travellers interested in religious art, the combination of historic sculptures and these facilities is a useful point of reference.

History can also be found beyond the church, in a number of different places: at the Føre archaeological site, stone cists, burial mounds and standing stones can be seen. Svinøya is home to Northern Norway’s largest registered collection of Iron Age burial mounds; at low tide, you can walk to the island. The fishermen at Buholmen specialised in “rav og rekling”: fatty strips of halibut that were dried and then smoked or salted. The fishing village mound on Buholmen is an automatically protected cultural monument.

Coastal Trail and Summer Events

The coastal hiking trail from Nykvåg to Sandviksanden runs along the shore and offers views of the six distinctive bird cliffs around Nykvåg. Alongside beaches and historic sites, it gives travellers a specific route to explore if they’d like to include a coastal hike in their stay.

Summer events can also play a role in planning your trip: Reginedagan takes place in Bø in the last week of July. The Arctic Sea Kayak Race takes place every summer. If you’re interested in these events, you can make them a focus of your trip alongside nature and cultural discoveries.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Bø, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your holiday: coastal landscapes and beaches, art and cultural history, or a stay planned around summer events. This makes it easier to choose accommodation that suits the experiences that matter most to you.

Other places to explore in Bø include Hovden, Steine, Bø, Straumsjøen, Bø i Vesterålen and Guvåg.
