Bø: Art, Coastal Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Bø
Coastal Culture, Literature and the Museum
The Bø Museum explores coastal culture and the writer Regine Normann (1867–1939). The museum thus links a subject from life on the coast with a named author. Its exhibitions offer two distinct points of interest for a cultural stop: coastal culture and literature.
On display are the Lofotkista in the rorbu, Nordland boats in the boathouse, and the Eventyrskogen. The exhibits range from a specific display item to boats and a forest-themed attraction. The museum therefore presents coastal culture in more than one way.
Sculptures in Vinje and Vinjesjøen
In Vinje stands “Rodd Fiske,” a seven-metre-long Corten steel sculpture by Christin Løkke. In Vinjesjøen is “Mannen fra havet”: the sculpture by Kjell Erik Killi Olsen is 4.5 metres tall and Bø’s contribution to the Skulpturlandskap Nordland art project. The works differ in their locations, materials and links to the project.
Another work in Vinje is “Det røde gullbergslottet,” created by Terese Riis on a transformer kiosk. It is Bø’s contribution to a regional art project that incorporates transformer kiosks into its design. Art can therefore be encountered not only as standalone sculptures, but also on an everyday utility structure.
The area with the Skulpturlandskap Nordland open-air gallery, the stage and the nearby museum was intended to become a cultural centre for residents and visitors to Bø. Signposts at Vinjesjøen point to Bø bygdemuseum, Skulpturlandskap and the open-air gallery. Art, museums and cultural history thus form a distinct focus for planning your trip.
Bø Church and Its History
Bø Church is nearby: a wooden cruciform church with 370 seats. The church is protected. Its architecture offers another cultural highlight alongside the sculptures and the museum’s themes.
In the municipality of Bø, Bø Church was built between 1822 and 1824 and consecrated on 8 August 1824. It is the sixth church to have stood on the Bø farm in the municipality. Its construction, consecration and succession of churches connect the building with local history without requiring a detailed art-historical interpretation.
Marked Hiking Trails and Choosing a Holiday Focus
If you would also like to spend time outdoors, marked hiking trails lead to Vetten (467 m) and Lynghaugtinden (504 m). The trails start from both Steine and Straume, providing two named hiking destinations and two starting points to help you find your way.
Culture and hiking offer different focuses: the museum, sculptures and area around Bø Church centre on coastal culture, literature, art and history; the marked trails lead to the two named hiking destinations. When looking for a holiday apartment in Bø, you can first consider which interests you want to shape your stay. This helps you plan around the experiences that matter most to you.
