Alstahaug – Culture, Sea and Hiking Destinations
Accommodation in Alstahaug
Alstahaug combines striking cultural attractions with hiking destinations and experiences by the water. You might be interested in a day of history and architecture, plan a walk through the landscape, or spend time at the beach. The different highlights give your trip a variety of themes—and can help you choose the area where you would like to look for a holiday apartment.
Culture between the museum, church and Viking Age
The Petter Dass Museum is the millennium site of Nordland County. Its main building was designed by Snøhetta AS between 2001 and 2007. At the museum, Margrethes Kafé serves dishes made with fresh, locally produced ingredients. This makes it possible to combine a visit with a meal, without having to set aside separate days of your trip for culture and regional cuisine.
Another historic site is Alstahaug Church, a Romanesque medieval church whose oldest section was built around 1200. Daily guided tours are offered there during the summer season; outside the summer season, tours are available by appointment. A 2-kilometre trail runs through the surrounding landscape beside the church. It is suitable for a leisurely walk or a family outing, offering a shorter walking option alongside more challenging hikes.
At the chieftain’s seat at Sandnes stands a reconstructed longhouse, 65 metres long and 7–10 metres wide. A guided tour offers insight into Helgeland’s Viking history. The reconstructed chieftain’s farm is located outside the town of Sandnessjøen; visitors can experience life in the Viking Age there. Those interested in history will find a different perspective here than at the museum or the medieval church.
On Tjøtta, the International War Cemetery serves both as a burial ground and a memorial to the victims of the MS Rigel tragedy. It commemorates more than 2,500 prisoners of war and soldiers who died when the MS Rigel sank on 27 November 1944. There is a rest area with toilets and benches for visitors. The Tjøtta Bygdesamling comprises around 1,200 registered objects; guided tours are available by prior arrangement.
Hikes, beaches and trails by the water
There are several different destinations to choose from for a walk. The recreation area by the Sandneselva includes walking paths and a nature meeting point with a shelter and benches. Storvatnet on Tjøtta is an easily accessible hiking destination with a fire pit and barbecue shelter. Those looking for a greater challenge can turn to the mountain range De syv søstre: its seven distinctive peaks lie just outside Sandnessjøen, and marked trails lead to each one. Hiking to one or two peaks is achievable for experienced hikers in good physical condition.
At Botn Havsbad, the swimming area is partially sheltered, making the water noticeably warmer than in the open sea. The soft sandy beach is suitable for all ages. Scenic walking paths lead from there along the river to several spots on its banks. The beach and riverside trails offer experiences different from summit hikes and may appeal to those looking for a more relaxed day.
Cycling is another way to explore Sandnessjøen. Kystriksveien is also relevant for finding your way on a trip through Alstahaug: Provincial Road 17 runs through Alstahaug. If you mainly want to include cultural attractions, a particular walk or activities by the water in your trip, these different interests may influence your choice of area to stay in. The best way to start looking for a holiday apartment is therefore to consider the places and experiences that matter to your trip.
