Vefsn combines a vast landscape of high mountains, fjords, caves and rivers with cultural discoveries in Mosjøen. When choosing a holiday rental, you might consider whether you want to focus on nature and water, the city’s historic sites or a range of activities during your trip. The Vefsna River is known as a good salmon river; in Mosjøen, the Vefsna and Skjerva meet and flow into the Vefsnfjord.

Mountains, rivers and remarkable routes

The landscape offers a range of ways to plan a trip, and Vefsn is not limited to just one type of excursion. Those interested in mountain peaks will find Brurskanken, the second-highest peak in Vefsn. Another way to gain altitude is the Helgelandstrappa: with 4,175 steps, it is considered the world’s longest stone staircase. It runs from the Vefsna River just outside Mosjøen’s centre to the summit of Øyfjellet. The number of steps shows how much this staircase shapes the area as an active day-trip destination; plan it as an experience in its own right.

Mosjøen: city history and culture

Sjøgata is Mosjøen’s oldest district and a major tourist attraction, with several heritage-listed buildings. The Vefsn Museum offers a historical walking tour there, providing insights into Mosjøen’s trading history. If you are interested in the town’s history, you can make this tour a cultural highlight alongside the buildings. Byparken is another special place in the city: this site of cultural and historical significance was protected under the Cultural Heritage Act in 2009. It is a public park open to everyone and also serves as an open-air museum.

Music and events offer further cultural experiences alongside the city’s history. Every Friday, Kulturverkstedet Mosjøen hosts a lunchtime concert featuring local musicians, dedicated amateurs and professional musicians. The café there serves traditional dishes. Festspillene Helgeland is a festival week in Mosjøen with more than 100 events and 30 exhibitions. The city’s cultural offerings therefore include both regular concerts and a large-scale festival.

Water, caves and activities

There are two different descriptions of bathing spots: Bystranda is a bathing beach over 200 metres long, with coral sand, a playground and a fire pit. Mosjøen’s town beach is a central bathing spot with white sand, palm trees and a playground. These specific differences can help you decide which beach setting appeals to you most when planning your trip.

Finnvika is home to masonry remains from the Second World War, which were part of an unfinished slipway for small boats. An easily accessible path leads from the car park to the bay, and there is also a diving platform. If you enjoy exploring nature and history side by side, Finnvika offers both, while the masonry remains retain their historical context.

Above Mosjøen lies Øyfjellgrotta, a 500-metre-long limestone cave for which guided tours are available. A tour lasts about three hours and includes an underground river that is dry in summer. For water-based activities, Kippermoen Sports Center has a sports pool, a heated therapy pool, a paddling pool, a diving tower and a water slide. The nearby Kjemsåsen alpine centre offers a children’s slope as well as green, red and black runs for different skill levels.
