Lødingen: Nature, Culture and Discoveries
Accommodation in Lødingen
Lødingen lies between Lofoten, Vesterålen, Ofoten and Hålogaland. The area combines a coastal alpine landscape with cultural history and experiences involving hiking, cycling and diving. When planning your trip, you can choose from nature, rock art, museums and activities on Offersøy. The Møysalen Landscape Protection Area defines the natural character of the region; at Nes and Voje, you can discover different perspectives on the history and life of the municipality.
Coastal Alpine Landscape and Trails at Nes
The Møysalen Landscape Protection Area covers 67 km² and lies in the municipalities of Hadsel, Sortland and Lødingen. It has been protected since 2003. The area preserves a coastal alpine landscape, its associated biodiversity and cultural heritage. Since the area spans several municipalities, its geographical reach extends beyond Lødingen.
At Nes, you can choose between different trails and destinations. The marked hiking trail to the rock carvings at Nes is about 2.5 kilometres long. The carvings are visible in spring, summer and autumn, provided they are not covered by snow. Another route goes around old Nes: it takes about an hour, covers 5.5 kilometres over easy terrain and finishes with an ascent of about 1 kilometre from Neshamn. The distance and terrain give you concrete points of reference when planning these two activities into your day.
Cultural History and Special Places
At Kysthuset in Voje, a museum displays boats, engines and objects from homes, boathouses and quays in the municipality of Lødingen. The exhibition thus focuses on various places in local life. Vestbygd Church in Vågehamn is also a distinctive building: the wooden long church has 230 seats.
On the shore at Hustad Gård in Lødingen stands “Øye i stein,” a sculpture by Anish Kapoor created in collaboration with Lødingen Steinindustri. It consists of a large block of Lødingen monzonite, a granite that is 180 million years old. If you are interested in the history of the place, you can also consider a guided tour about the history of Lødingen and Dampskipsbrygga. Tours are offered to groups of more than 8–10 people and cover Lødingen’s history from the Viking Age to the present day.
Experiences on Offersøy
On Offersøy in Lødingen Vestbygd, a guided moose safari is offered from September to March and lasts two and a half to three hours. For a different way to explore the area, Offersøy Feriesenter in Vestbygda offers opportunities for cycling and hiking, so you can discover the surroundings at your own pace. Diving stays are also available there around Offersøy. The archipelago is home to many fish species, old wrecks and underwater vegetation—a world of its own alongside the trails on land.
Mummihuset is located on a hill on Offersøy, about 200 metres from the holiday centre. It is housed in a former military communications station and offers a 360-degree panoramic view. The building’s former function and its sweeping views give this place a different character from the museum and hiking trail.
Local Produce and Further Discoveries
Den Sorte Gryte combines a farm café with a farm shop. It offers its own goat cheese and other farm products, including goat hides, goat meat and gifts. The café is open in July; groups are welcome year-round. This makes a food stop another way to get to know Lødingen beyond its landscapes and culture.
