Rock carvings, an ancient church site and a decommissioned coastal fort give Lødingen several concrete points of interest to help plan your trip. There are also trails of varying lengths and a mountain summit within walking distance of the centre. Whether you are mainly interested in history or want to spend time outdoors, the individual destinations and their conditions can be organised according to the season and how much time you would like to spend.

Rock Art, Trails and History in Lødingen

Rock carvings are located at Nes by Kanstadfjord, with a reindeer particularly clearly visible. The carvings can be seen in spring, summer and autumn, provided they are not covered by snow. In the wider Lødingen destination, a marked hiking trail leads to the rock carvings and is about 2.5 kilometres long. Another hiking option there is the circular trail around the old Nes fort: it takes about an hour, covers 5.5 kilometres over easy terrain and ends with an ascent of about one kilometre from Neshamn. The distance and duration make it easier to distinguish between the two hikes according to how much time you want to spend; they do not describe a connection between the trails.

The history of Nes Fort can also be placed in context: the Germans built the coastal fort during the Second World War. The Norwegian Defence Forces later took over and modernised the fort, before it was decommissioned in 2002. Lødingen Church stands on an ancient church site; the present church is probably already the fourth to occupy this location. These different layers of history make Nes and Lødingen interesting for travellers who want to include historical sites in their plans alongside a hike.

Dampskipsbrygga is one of the oldest buildings in Lødingen harbour. Guided tours about the history of Lødingen and Dampskipsbrygga are available for groups of more than 8–10 people. The story spans the Viking Age to the present day. Check the arrangements for groups before your trip. The mountain summit Boya is within walking distance of central Lødingen, making it another concrete point of reference when planning activities around the area.

Cultural attractions are also spread across the wider area. Kysthuset in Voje is a museum with boats, engines and objects from homes, boathouses and quays in the municipality of Lødingen. Vestbygd Church in Vågehamn is a wooden long church with 230 seats. On the shore by Hustad Gård stands “Øye i stein”, a sculpture by Anish Kapoor created in collaboration with Lødingen Steinindustri. It consists of a large block of Lødingen monzonite, a granite that is 180 million years old. The museum, church and sculpture each offer a different focus: collections, church architecture and contemporary art.

The wider Lødingen destination also offers seasonal and guided experiences. A guided moose safari lasting two and a half to three hours is offered on Offersøy in Lødingen Vestbygd from September to March; the season may change, so check the latest information. Offersøy Feriesenter offers diving stays around Offersøy. The archipelago there is home to many fish species, old wrecks and underwater vegetation. Seasonal conditions and availability for this activity may change.

The café is open in July; groups are welcomed year-round.
