Tjøtta combines remarkable historic sites with trails and places to visit in nature. At Tjøtta gård, you can encounter traces of different eras: the cultural trail presents cultural heritage from the Stone Age to the modern era and winds through a landscape where history and nature come together. Other highlights include a visit to the Bygdesamling, the memorial site and the places to visit around Storvatnet. As you plan your holiday, you can decide whether to focus mainly on farm history, culture or experiences in nature.
Farm History and Cultural Trail at Tjøtta gård
About a thousand years ago, Tjøtta gård was the seat of the chieftain Hårek of Tjøtta. Tjøtta Church is also located on the farm grounds: it stands at the edge of the site of a large medieval estate. The church was completed in 1851 and built from natural stone to designs by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch (1801–1865). This makes it possible to discover the area’s history through tangible features of its buildings and landscape, while the cultural trail ranges across more than one era.
The Ringtun at Leikenga on Tjøtta gård consists of several small house foundations arranged around an open space. Today, the embankments can be seen as low rises in the landscape. The cultural trail covers a broad sweep of time, from the Stone Age to the modern era. If you would like a guided historical tour of Tjøtta gård, you can contact Tjøtta Historielag.
Church, Memorial Site and Bygdesamling
The Tjøtta Memorial Site commemorates Soviet soldiers who died in Northern Norway during the Second World War, 1941–1945, and are buried there. A seven-metre-high memorial stone stands by a mass grave. The site offers a solemn historical perspective on your trip and has a very different character from a walk along the cultural trail or a visit to the collection.
The Tjøtta Bygdesamling has around 1,200 registered objects. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement; there are no regular opening hours. If you would like to visit the collection, be sure to arrange your visit in advance. Together with the church and the historic traces at Tjøtta gård, it offers another way to explore the area’s cultural history.
Nature Destinations and Trails
For a change from the historic sites, the Tjøtta area has several themed trails as well as a birdwatching hide. There is a fire pit and a barbecue shelter at Storvatnet, and the lake is considered an easily accessible destination. There are several ways to enjoy the outdoors: you can plan a walk along a themed trail, visit the birdwatching hide or spend time at Storvatnet.
