Sekken: Summit Views, Island Trails and Cultural History

On Sekken, summit trails and views across the Romsdalsfjord meet island history and small cultural discoveries. When planning your trip, you can choose between hikes with different focuses, a cycling tour and an insight into the history of the place. These interests offer a good guide to the experiences you want to shape your stay.

Hiking between summits and fjord views

The “Toppløype på Sekken” is a circular route over several summits with viewpoints. A prominent point on the island is Tranhaugen: at 304 m, it is Sekken’s highest summit. From there, the 360-degree view stretches across large parts of the Romsdalsfjord. If you want to combine several summits and viewpoints on one hike, this offers a different focus from a shorter, explicitly easy walk.

One such easier hike leads to Gapahuken ved Eikamyra. The route follows forest roads and good trails; along the way, there are views south across the Romsdalsfjord. For visitors to the island, the ferry terminal is the most convenient starting point for the hike to Vassura. The summit is 295 m high and offers views of the village and surrounding area. Sekken therefore offers a choice of different destinations, each with its own viewpoint.

Teppinga is also an interesting point along the route: the old dam lies beside Fjellvegen, a gravel hiking trail that runs across the island. There are rest areas with benches near Teppinga. From there, you can turn back or continue along the hiking trail to the village on the island’s south side. The option to end or continue the walk at this point gives you a clear choice between heading back and going on.

Cycling and getting there

For an active day on two wheels, there is the 20 km “Sekken rundt” cycling tour. If you prefer to get around on foot, you can choose between the various hiking destinations: several summits, a viewpoint or an easy hike along forest roads and good trails. This lets you tailor your stay to your preferred activity, without all the experiences having the same character.

The journey from Molde to Sekken takes a little over half an hour. On Sekken, the “Sekken rundt” tour begins as soon as you leave the ferry. To help you get your bearings on the island, the bus passes the church at the eastern end, the shop, the school and the museum, and stops at Vestadstranda. These stops help you become familiar with the places that play a role on the island.

Church, memorial sites and museum

Sekken kirke dates from 1908. A memorial stele at the church commemorates the Battle of Sekken. Another memorial site is the Bauta on Sekkenes: the people of Sekken erected it in memory of King Håkon Herdebrei and the Battle of Sekken in 1162. Both sites refer to the battle, while the Bauta also names King Håkon Herdebrei.

Concerts are also occasionally held in the church, organised by the church council of Sekken menighet. If you are interested in a guided tour of Sekken Museum, please enquire; groups should book in advance. In summer and early autumn, the museum has a volunteer-run café in the “Gamle Bedehus”. Galleri Sekken regularly hosts exhibitions. The cultural offering therefore includes both historic memorial sites and concerts, a museum and a gallery.
