Molde: Fjord, City History and Experiences
Accommodation in Molde
Molde lies on the Romsdalsfjord and is surrounded by mountains and fjords. The city brings together a harbour promenade and culture with a wide range of ways to enjoy active days: you can discover historic buildings and traditional costumes, walk through parks up to the Varden viewpoint, or explore Moldejazz and Moldebadet. Which of these aspects you would like to focus on is a useful starting point when choosing your holiday rental.
City History at the Romsdalsmuseet
Founded in 1912, the Romsdalsmuseet showcases buildings and interiors from across the region. In Bygata, you can see typical Molde townhouses dating from before the Second World War. Since opening in 2016, the Krona visitor centre has featured a permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions. A visit to the museum lets you explore both regional buildings and homes, as well as a range of exhibitions.
A special feature of the museum is the Bunad workshop. Traditional costumes from Romsdal are reconstructed there, and visitors can watch the craftspeople at work during working hours. There are also signs for 29 historic buildings in the city centre. Anyone interested in city history and craftsmanship will find several specific points of interest for a culturally focused stay.
Harbour Promenade, Views and Paths into Nature
Sjøfronten is a continuous harbour promenade in the heart of Molde. From there, you can enjoy views of the fjord and mountains; the promenade is home to restaurants, art and playgrounds. This brings together different interests in one place: you can explore the harbour area and its art, or plan a stop at the playgrounds with children.
The walk along the Grønne Korridor offers a different view of the city. It runs from Storkaia through parks, older buildings and nature, climbing up to the Varden viewpoint. The route connects these different surroundings along the way; Varden is the named destination of the walk. When planning your holiday, you can choose between focusing on the harbour and city life or making time for a hike.
Water, Aquaculture and Unique Experiences
Moldebadet has two water slides and three diving boards at heights of 1, 3 and 5 metres. The family pool has a current channel, a massage jet, a fountain and a climbing wall. The pool is also equipped with floor fittings for a wheelchair ramp. These features give you a clear idea of what you can find there for water-based activities.
Nausta is an architect-designed floating sauna on the waterfront promenade in central Molde. You can swim there year-round or enjoy the Moldefjord. At the Salmon Center Molde, an interactive exhibition introduces visitors to Norwegian aquaculture. The centre also offers a RIB boat trip to an offshore salmon farming facility, where visitors can see how the salmon live in the net pens.
Music and Winter Trails
Moldejazz takes place every year in July, during the 29th calendar week. The festival offers around 120 concerts over six days. If music is an important part of your trip, this gives you a specific time of year to plan around.
There is another side to winter activities: more than 42 kilometres of ski trails are groomed in Moldemarka, within the municipality. Groomed trails lead to Varden and Skihytta. When choosing your holiday rental, you can therefore first consider whether you want your stay to focus mainly on city history, the harbour and events, or on trails and activities in nature.
