Midsund: Stairways, Kayaking and Fishing History
Accommodation in Midsund
The Midsundtrappene stairways lead up the mountains on stone steps through an island landscape shaped by fjords, the sea and distinctive mountains. Kayaking routes, fishing history and various hiking trails are also among the experiences around Midsund. You can plan your trip around whether you would rather be out on the water, explore the landscape on foot or learn more about local history.
Stairways and Views
The first section of the Midsundtrappene, Kumlokket, was built in 2016 by Sherpas from Nepal. Kumlokket offers a beautiful view of the centre of Midsund. Nearby, a clearly marked trail also runs along the western ridge to Rørsethornet, which is about 659 metres high. Steps and markers indicate the route. If you are looking for another hike, consider the trip to Digergubben and Midsundhornet: it starts in the centre of Midsund, at the bridge over the Bakkeelva. The trail is steep, but constructed steps make it accessible to many hikers.
A staircase with 500 steps leads to Aksla in the Midsund area. The hike is considered a suitable evening walk. Six different ski tours are also among the options described for Midsund. There are options to suit different interests, from climbs on stone steps to ski tours. Which one is right for your trip depends on the activity you would like to include.
Kayaking and the Underwater World
The Industriruta kayaking route runs from Sandneset campsite to the centre of Midsund. Along the way, the route passes fish reception facilities, aquaculture facilities, beaches and small coves. Another kayaking tour starts at Vågsmyran and leads to a small, secluded lagoon and a beach at Rørset. From there, you can look out over the fjord towards Jendemsfjellet. The two tours differ in their destinations and the experiences they offer, so they should not be regarded as one and the same route.
Midsund also has its own underwater attractions: the Midsundet diving area is known for its rich marine life, and wreck diving is possible in Midsund. This includes the wreck of the D/S Ørland in Bløbukta. The ship was sunk there by German aircraft on 23 April 1940. For trip planning, this combines a specific historical connection with a glimpse of the underwater world.
Fishing History and Events
Antonbua is a typical Midsund building associated with sea fishing and fish processing. An exhibition focuses on the history of these industries. Guided tours can be arranged there for groups by request throughout the year. If you are interested in working and economic history, this offers a different way to experience Midsund than the hiking trails or kayaking.
A park is located near Antonbua, centrally positioned between Coop and Antonbua. It has various play equipment, seating and a small amphitheatre; there is also an opportunity to take a refreshing swim. Midsundfestivalen was founded in 2005 and has been held annually ever since. The programme includes daytime and evening concerts, a church concert, food and drink, sales and information stands, and various activities for children and adults. In addition, the Opstad Museum displays old engines dating from 1920 to 1986, including around 30 old tractors and boat engines.
Getting There and Getting Around
Midsund has two ferry connections: to Romsdal in the northeast and to Sunnmøre in the southwest. Midsund Marina is in the centre and has a guest harbour with toilets, showers and a laundry room.
