Longva by the Fjord

Longva brings together the history of a single farm and life along the Longvafjord. Gunnabuda: Fishing history and life by the fjord

Gunnabuda is located in a former fish-processing plant that is now used to serve tourists. At the same time, the site is listed in Haram Municipality’s cultural heritage plan for Flemsøy/Skuløy as a cultural heritage site associated with the fishing industry. Visitors interested in history can take guided tours of the old workers’ quarters on the upper floor. This brings together the industrial past and today’s visitor services in one place.

Tomas Longva’s story is also connected with Longva: he later moved to Longva on Flemsøy/Skuløy, took over a farm there and adopted the name Longva. A memorial stele to him stands approximately where the former Longvatunet farm was located. Its approximate location and connection with a former farm make the stele a distinctive stopping point for anyone interested in the history of the area.

Kayaking on the Longvafjord

The “Padletur på Longvafjorden” route starts and ends at Gunnabuda in Longva. It passes through relatively sheltered waters and can be undertaken regardless of the water level. In good conditions, it is described as straightforward for people with kayaking experience. However, the route is not recommended when winds exceed a fresh breeze, so wind conditions are a factor in deciding whether this excursion is suitable.

Gunnabuda offers sea kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for hire, as well as guided tours on the fjord. With a little luck, you may spot seals playing in the shallow water along the kayak route. The Kroksholmene are also nearby: this group of small islands has narrow passages that can be explored by kayak.

Coast, hiking and seasonal activities

The time of year also affects the activities available. During the summer months, Gunnabuda offers bicycle hire. When there is enough snow, the local sports club prepares cross-country ski trails on Flemsøy/Skuløy. This is a seasonal winter offering that depends on sufficient snowfall. The Skulebua viewpoint hut is located on Mount Skulen at an altitude of 492 metres; the island therefore offers a mountain destination as well as activities on the fjord.

A glimpse of local cultural life

The children’s theatre group of UL Fram on Flemsøy/Skuløy stages two regular performances in its home community each year. The adult theatre group regularly puts on a performance at Easter. The Longvafjord separates Haramsøy from Flemsøy/Skuløy; both islands are part of Nordøyane. A breakwater protects the fjord from swell and waves from the open sea.
