Nature between rivers, forest and marsh
The Veset and Holter Nature Reserve covers 219 dekars. It was established to protect threatened nature and safeguard biodiversity. It is maintained as a peaceful, nature-rich area for hiking and outdoor recreation for the residents of Nes. Those interested in this landscape will find a different focus on nature here than on trails specifically devoted to topics such as forestry or plant and animal life.
The Sagstuen nature trail is a marked circular route with 40 information boards. They focus on forestry and plant and animal life. At the forest lake Fløyta, you can follow a signposted, marked path along the entire lake to its northern end, where there are good swimming spots. A path also leads from Udnes School to Hvamsetertjern, where there are also good swimming spots. These destinations combine nature trails with water, while each route has a different starting point.
A signposted, marked path leads to Vardehøgda, one of the highest points in Nes. Along the way, you pass Dalsjøhytta and Dalsjøen. At Vardehøgda stands a 13-metre-high observation tower, offering views across half of Eastern Norway. For a hike with a view, this is a different destination from the circular route at Fløyta or the themed Sagstuen nature trail.
Cultural sites and historic trails
Stein skole in Vormsund is a school museum designed in the 1930s by well-known Norwegian artists. During the summer season, Stein skole offers scheduled guided tours at 13:00 and 14:30 on every day it is open. The Funnefoss Industrial Workers’ Museum tells a different story: it presents the history of the paper mill, which employed 80 workers and was the first major industrial enterprise in the municipality of Nes. The museum is located by the Glomma in Opakermoen and offers guided tours of the small workers’ homes on the farm.
Auli Mølle also tells the story of a place’s long history of use: the mill was built in 1909, while milling operations there date back to the 17th century. Gamle Hvam Museum showcases an authentic historic farm complex with buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. If you are especially interested in cultural monuments and farm history, these places offer a different focus from the nature trails and swimming spots.
The Kulturminneløypa trail passes through a cultural landscape of national importance. Information boards tell the history of some of its cultural monuments, and you can choose your own starting point. Another way to discover selected cultural monuments is KulTour, a cycling tour in Nes through Vormadalen. It starts at the Nes church ruins and follows a signposted cycle route through the forest, past a golf course. The church ruins stand on the headland where the Glomma and Vorma meet.
From Hvamsetra, you can continue the hike to Røverskansen. There you will find the remains of an old fortification dating from 400 to 600. Another hike starts on the opposite side of the road from Seterstøa station. It has an elevation gain of 130 metres; at the top, there are views of Funnefoss and the Glomma. These specific differences—a cultural route with a freely chosen starting point, a cycling tour, a hike with elevation gain or trails to nature destinations—can help you decide what you want to focus on during your stay and when looking for a holiday rental.
