Churches, farm history and local traditions
Nore stave church is a cross-shaped church of the Numedal type, built around 1167. In Kirkebygda, Uvdal stave church stands beside the Nore og Uvdal Bygdetun open-air museum. The museum was established on the grounds of an old vicarage; the schoolhouse and Prestegardsburet from the former vicarage have been preserved. Excavations beneath the floor of Uvdal stave church in 1978 uncovered, among other things, more than 500 coins. A visit to the churches therefore connects visitors with several facets of the region’s history.
The historic heritage also includes sites whose form and layout can be described directly: the Vasstulan hunting site comprises 21 stone-lined trapping pits arranged in a system on an elevated moraine ridge. The Frygne burial ground consists of about 30 stone mounds, 18 of which are interpreted as burial mounds. One is elongated; the rest are round. At the Bygdetun, visitors can take part in haymaking, among other activities, from 1 June to 31 August. Waffles, coffee and Kling, a traditional local dish, are also sold there.
