Rollag between ski trails, cycling routes and history

Rollag can be explored through three themes: winter sports on Vegglifjell, cycling routes and historic architecture. The differences between the ski trail network, cycling routes and cultural sites offer different ways to plan your trip—whether you want to spend active days outdoors or make time for historical discoveries.

Ski trails and winter activities

Vegglifjell has around 100 kilometres of groomed ski trails through open forests and mountain landscapes, reaching up to the high mountains. The facilities described are separate: the Vegglifjell ski centre has a T-bar lift and two groomed downhill runs; the lift was described as new in 2019. Lauvhovd ski stadium has a floodlit 600-metre loop and a one-kilometre sprint track. The facility was completed in 2022. The Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell Nature Reserve covers 158 square kilometres and is one of Norway’s largest nature reserves. It lies partly within Rollag municipality and offers nature-friendly outdoor activities all year round. The area has old mountain pasture paths and a network of ski trails in winter. Trail maintenance and grooming vary by location.

Cycling routes and trails

The cycling route along the Numedalslågen in Rollag is considered quiet, easy and family-friendly. It offers varied scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage sites, as well as several interesting stops, including Rollag Bygdetun and Rollag Stave Church. For comparison, the stated route lengths are: “Rollag rundt” is 19.5 kilometres long, while “Kjerre og Langåsen rundt” is 21 kilometres; this tour starts at Veggli Vertshus. The “Heimseterrunden” starts and ends at Veggli Fjellstue and has several viewpoints. Route information and conditions may change; check the relevant description before setting off.

“Trillemarka rundt” also passes through the nature reserve, but cycling is only permitted on routes where it is allowed. E-bikes are subject to restrictions within the reserve. If you are planning this tour, check the rules that apply to your intended route. For walking, Vegglifjell and Rollag have a network of marked trails, including mountain hikes of varying difficulty. The marked trail to Geiteskallen goes via Geiterova and Geiteryggen to the highest point, with views in every direction. The Nordmannsslepa is a historic hiking trail through Veggli.

Architecture and shared discoveries

Rollag Bygdetun is next to Rollag Stave Church and the vicarage. It consists of 14 buildings brought together from various farms in Rollag. Its exhibitions feature more than 1,000 objects illustrating everyday life in the area. During the summer season, the café at the Bygdetun serves waffles and ice cream. So if you would like to combine your visit with a short break along the way, there is a seasonal option here.

Rollag Vicarage is considered Norway’s oldest surviving vicarage; it includes a dwelling house dating from the 17th century. Alstadloftet is the oldest house in Rollag and dates from the Middle Ages. Søre Tråen consists of four listed buildings. Austsidevegen, County Road 2792 through Rollag, is a good route for viewing traditional architecture. Alongside the trails, these places give your stay a clear historical and cultural focus.

Every year during Middelalderuka, a pilgrimage walk takes place between Rollag Stave Church and Veggli Church. Vegglidagen is held every August in Veggli Activity Park as a family day with activities, market stalls and entertainment. The exact programme may change.
