Getting to Know the Places and Routes

Within the wider travel destination of Buskerud, Geilo is located in the municipality of Hol, in a valley between the Hardangervidda and Hallingskarvet national parks. In Geilo, the Flow Motion Trail runs downhill for four kilometres from Bjødnahovda, at the lift’s top station in Vestlia, to the SkiGeilo Activity Park. Hol is most commonly reached by train from Oslo or Bergen, or by bus or car. Check timetables separately before finalising your journey. Haugastøl station is a starting point for Rallarvegen, which sees heavy bicycle traffic in summer. The cycle route is 82 kilometres long in total. From Haugastøl, it follows the Bergen Line via Finse, Hallingskeid and Myrdal to Flåm. Check seasonal conditions before setting out.

Another option is the approximately 12-kilometre Ustedalsfjorden Rundt, a route used both for hiking and as a cross-country ski trail. Compared with the 82-kilometre Rallarvegen, both the route lengths and the activities mentioned differ. Surface and seasonal conditions on Ustedalsfjorden Rundt may vary.

Museums and Cultural History

The Dagali Museum displays buildings and objects from Dagali, Skurdalen, Tunhovd and Uvdal. It is designed as an old farmstead, with various buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Every summer, the museum holds art exhibitions by recognised artists in the Kjønås stabbur; exhibition details may change.

One tradition is the Dagali Museum Day, held during Dagali Days in mid-July. It includes an outdoor service, refreshments, open houses and various activities. Exact dates and programmes may vary, so check the latest information when planning a trip for the event.

At Fekjo Cultural Heritage Park, archaeological evidence meets landscape art by Gunnveig Nerol and Terje Isungset. The archaeological remains include burial mounds from the Viking Age, dating back to the 9th century. Most of the graves examined were women’s graves. There are also seven charcoal kilns and an iron-production site.

The old Hol Church dates from the 13th century and is the oldest church in the municipality of Hol. Hol therefore offers a range of historical themes: archaeological evidence, farm buildings in a museum setting and a medieval church.
