Krødsherad brings together the southern part of Lake Krøderen, the mountain area around Norefjell and a distinctive railway history. The municipality surrounds the southern part of the lake and has a shoreline on Krøderen. When choosing a holiday rental, it helps to first consider what you want to focus on during your trip: water activities, hiking and mountain scenery, or culture centred on railways and storytelling.
Waters of Krøderfjorden
Krøderfjorden is 41 km long and offers opportunities for fishing, swimming and boating. There are several designated bathing spots along the fjord in Krødsherad. Boat trips are another possible experience: MS Kryllingen II offers cruises on Krøderfjorden. Its seasonal programme includes themed trips, for example featuring prawns, wine, knitting and wartime history, as well as other offerings.
If you would like to take your own boat out on the water, there are public boat ramps at two different locations. In Noresund, a ramp below the car park at Villa Fridheim on Bjørøya provides access to the fjord. Another public boat ramp is located in the centre of Krøderen. Noresund Outlet rents out canoes for trips on Krøderfjorden. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus on bathing spots, boat trips or a canoe excursion.
Hiking destinations and Norefjell
The local hiking programme includes 22 destinations with hiking log boxes. The trails are marked in blue; many are also marked with GPS and listed on UT.no. One specific hike starts at Krødsheradhallen and goes to Kleivavarden. At Norefjell, Høgevarde, at 1,459 m, is the highest point in Krødsherad and one of the area’s most popular hiking destinations. On clear days, the view from there reaches as far as Jotunheimen, Hardangerjøkulen and Gaustatoppen.
There are also a range of activities at Norefjell in winter. The area has two snow parks and three children’s areas. One of the snow parks is in Bøseter; the central Norefjellparken has runs for all ability levels. When snow conditions are sufficient, cross-country skiing trips can start directly from Norefjellstua and Norefjell Ski & Spa. There are several shelters along the cross-country trails. These options make it easier to choose between a focus on the water or the mountains, without having to commit to just one type of holiday.
Heritage railway and fairy-tale culture
Krøderbanen ceased operating as an NSB railway in 1985 and has since been run as a heritage railway by Norsk Jernbaneklubb and Stiftelsen Krøderbanen. At Krøderen station, the goods shed houses the exhibition “For full damp”. This technical heritage site and exhibition give the visit a distinctive railway and technology focus.
Villa Fridheim offers a different cultural perspective: this well-preserved Swiss-style house is a fairy-tale museum with a particular focus on fairy tales, storytelling and intangible cultural heritage. The museum is primarily devoted to the life’s work of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe. Villa Fridheim also hosts exhibitions, concerts and events.
