Nittedal is shaped by the valley floor of the Nitelva and the woodland areas that surround the place from different directions. Here, experiences in nature meet local history and opportunities for active days. Whether you are particularly interested in forests, cultural sites or winter sports, the different highlights can help you plan a stay in Nittedal that suits you.

Valley and woodland areas

The 37-kilometre-long Nitelva begins in the north as the Hakadalselva and flows from north to south through the valley floor of Nittedal. Fertile fields and grazing land lie on both sides of the river. The surrounding landscapes also provide a sense of direction: Lillomarka and Gjelleråsen lie to the south, Romeriksåsen to the east and Nordmarka to the west.

In the north of Nittedal, Rundkollen and Brunkollen lie within the Rundkollen Nature Reserve. The area consists mostly of old-growth forest and old, nutrient-poor bilberry spruce forest; pine forest is also represented. Nearby, Gjelleråsmarka borders Nittedal to the north. There is a well-developed network of forest paths and ski trails there, as well as several fire pits.

Salamanderparken was established to protect salamanders, inform the public and provide a learning site designed to be accessible for wheelchair users. In the forest right next to the park and close to Galleri Würth, five of the six amphibian species native to Norway and three of the country's five terrestrial reptile species can be found.

Active days in Hakadal and the valley

In Hakadal, Varingskollen Alpinsenter offers six ski runs and two terrain parks. The centre can be reached by train or car. Ski school, children's ski programmes and private alpine skiing lessons are available for adults and children. Skis and snowboards can be rented at Varingskollen for a full day; there is also a ski shop there.

Those who prefer cycling can include the “Nittedal på langs” tour through the valley floor in their plans. Possible detours lead into Nordmarka and Romeriksåsen. Hakadal Verk, on the old Greveveien, is a popular starting point for walks and cycling trips in the forest. Another way to explore the area is a digital local history walking game: it starts at Hakadal station and takes you past 21 stops using a smartphone.

Remains of Nittedal Kruttverk can be found along the Ørfiskebekken watercourse. A marked trail and information boards make it easier to explore the traces and buildings. Fishing is also possible at spots along the Nitelva, for example at Åros Bru, in Mølleparken in Rotnes, at Strøm and at Rulse bru. Anyone can fish at these spots without a fishing licence. Stolpejakten Nittedal also offers a free orienteering activity for all ages and experience levels: using a dedicated app, participants search for marked posts throughout the area.

Churches, local history and regional cuisine

Nittedal Bygdesamling is part of Nittedal Bygdetun and is located in the “1880 building” by Hagen School in the north of Nittedal. Its exhibition, “Jernet i bygda vår”, traces ironworking from bog iron ore to mining. It features various types of furnaces, from bloomery furnaces to blast furnaces.

The two churches also tell of different periods in the area's history. Nittedal kirke was built in 1869 on the site of an older stone church from the 12th century, Olavskirken. Hakadal kirke is the parish church of Hakadal in Nittedal. The rectangular wooden building dates from around 1610, has 150 seats and is a roadside church. The Nittedal Matfestival takes place every September, adding a culinary occasion to the area's nature and culture themes.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can therefore start by considering which focus you would like your stay to have: winter sports at Varingskollen, nature and trails in the woodland areas, or local history and culture.
