Hiking on the Kyststien
The Kyststien offers long and short hikes through varied terrain. The surfaces also vary: the route uses gravel paths, partly paved roads, vehicle tracks and trails. Cyclists should use the specially marked cycle route on the Kyststien. Hiking and cycling are therefore not simply the same use of the route: a separate marking is provided for cyclists.
Smaalensbanen and Sonsveien
Smaalensbanen is an old railway line through Vestby. It runs from Kjenn and Kjennstjernet through Hølen, across the Hølenviadukten and to Sonsveien station. The route is flat and accessible to everyone. This offers a different way to explore the municipality from the varied trails of the Kyststien. The Hølenviadukten is part of this route; it has been reopened to pedestrians and cyclists.
Trains stop at Sonsveien station. Son and the coastal path are a little over 3 km from there. This distance is a useful point of reference if you plan to include the station and a visit to Son or the coastal path. It does not specify a walking time, but can help you consider the station and your chosen destinations together when planning your day.
Maritime history in Son, Hølen and Hvitsten
The Son Coastal Culture Centre is in the heart of Son, on the site of the former Soon Baadbyggeri. At the centre, Jostushuset tells the story of a fisherman’s house in Son. Both names connect the maritime past to a specific place and house. If you are interested in history, you can plan this visit as a focus in its own right, alongside hikes or other outings.
In Hølen, the protected railway viaduct has spanned the Såna since 1879. Its history and role on Smaalensbanen make it a distinctive structure along the route. In Hvitsten, the old boathouses at the quay are Vestby municipality’s 1000-year cultural heritage site. These boathouses offer a different point of interest from the viaduct: here, it is a group of buildings at the quay; there, a railway bridge over the river.
Art, bridges and water
Ramme Art Gallery is an underground art gallery with two underground floors. It displays works by Norwegian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries who lived and created art in the local area. If you are planning a trip with an interest in art, you can consider this visit as a separate item on your itinerary alongside the historic sites in Son, Hølen and Hvitsten.
Rafsal Bru is also a historic structure: the stone arch bridge dates from before 1850. There are also two different options by the water. Hvitsten strand is a bathing beach in Hvitsten; Son Havn offers boat tourists several facilities in a safe harbour.
