In Aurskog-Høland, there are opportunities for fishing in more than 300 lakes, bodies of water and waterways. If you enjoy spending time by the water, this offers a broad theme for your stay. Fishing areas include not only lakes, but also other bodies of water and waterways. There are also marked hiking trails and several hiking destinations with cabins and overnight accommodation. You can therefore choose between an outing focused on fishing and a hike with a destination in nature.
One special natural area is Mikkelrud: it has been mown continuously for around 300 years and is rich in biodiversity. Today, Mikkelrud has a main building, a storehouse, a barn and a sheep shed. The long history of continuous mowing and the four buildings each offer a distinct way to experience the place—through its biodiverse landscape or its existing buildings. Mikkelrud is therefore a specific destination for visitors interested both in nature and in the buildings that can be seen there.
At Mangen Chapel, too, landscape and culture come together: the long church, built from logs, is situated by lakes Mangen and Viksjøen. There are hiking areas near the chapel. If you are interested in church architecture, you can include the chapel in your stay; if you would rather spend time outdoors, the nearby hiking areas offer another point of interest. The two lakes are specifically part of the chapel’s location.
Buildings, history and events
Aurskog-Høland open-air museum has 14 historic buildings. It hosts talks, concerts, exhibitions and festivals. The site thus combines historic buildings with an events programme that appeals to a range of cultural interests. If you would like to plan your stay around a specific event date, you can consider the programme of events as a separate part of your trip planning.
Another historic landmark is Toverudbautaen. It was erected in 1908 to mark the centenary of the Battle of Toverudsletta. The monument links a specific place with the commemoration of the battle; the year it was erected and the occasion give it a clear historical context. Aur Prestegård, in turn, is a church and vicarage dating from the 19th century, with a history reaching back to the Middle Ages. The site is also part of a pilgrimage hiking destination. Aurskog-Høland thus offers both a monument commemorating a precisely identified historical event and a church site with a long history and a connection to pilgrimage hikes.
In Skulerud, the Isbingen Museum is dedicated to the era of timber floating: it contains more than 100 objects from that period. Skulerud is considered a good starting point for a trip along the Halden Canal. A visit to the museum about timber floating and a trip along the canal can therefore be treated as separate travel interests, rather than combined into one tour. In summer, the Lokstallen Summer Café in Skulerud serves local food. Draisine rides are also available at Lokstallen.
Farm visits by arrangement
Killingmo Alpakka Gård is a visitor farm with alpacas, a donkey and other animals. The farm is suitable for all age groups and geared towards children and young people. Visits and bookings are by arrangement. For families planning a visit with children, this scheduling requirement is important: the farm is not a spontaneous activity that can be added without notice, but a destination for which you need to arrange your visit and booking in advance.
