Enebakk: Forest, Water and History

Enebakk combines forest landscapes, swimming spots and historic sites. In Østmarka National Park, you can choose from short and long trips on foot, by bike, on skis or by canoe. There are also churches with their own histories and the Flyktningeruta, a historic hiking trail through Enebakk and Eidskog to Sweden. Deciding which of these aspects you want to shape your stay is a good starting point for choosing where to stay.

Forest Trails and Historic Traces

Østmarka is a varied forest landscape with bodies of water, marshes, ravines and ridges. In the national park, you can choose between short and long trips and get around on foot, by bike, on skis or by canoe. The different landscape features give the area more than one character: water, open marshland and ridges are just as much a part of it as forests and ravines.

The Flyktningeruta passes through Enebakk and Eidskog and continues to Sweden. Along the historic trail are cultural heritage sites such as huts, shelters, farm complexes and other buildings. During the Second World War, they served as hiding places and as places of refuge and overnight accommodation for refugees and couriers. If you are interested in the history of the route, you can also discover it through the documented roles of these places.

Swimming Spots and Water Activities

There are three public swimming spots in Enebakk: Bermerud, Flateby Bruk and Vikstranda. Bermerud is at the northern end of Lyseren and has a sandy beach for children as well as an accessible ramp. Vikstranda offers a sandy cove for children and a bathing platform. The swimming spot is only a short distance from the bus stop or bus station in Vik. Flateby Bruk is on Øyeren, where you can also find the ruins of old industrial facilities.

Canoeing is another possible water activity. At Vangen, you can rent canoes to explore Mosjøen. In Enebakk municipality, west of Mosjøen in Østmarka National Park, is Vangen skistue, a place offering food and overnight accommodation.

ØyerenOpplevelser is based at Sand Farm in Enebakk and offers activities by, on and in the water. Canoes for two to three people per boat are available there; life jackets are included. The nature park at Sand Farm has 1.5 km of shoreline. For renters, it offers about 2 km of paths and hiking trails. ØyerenOpplevelser’s disc golf course has nine baskets.

Churches and Local History

Enebakk Church is an automatically protected medieval stone church dating from the 12th century and was built around the year 1200. It is open to the public on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 14:00. Mari Church has a different construction history: the wooden church was consecrated in 1761 and built on Tangenhaugen below Vestby Farm. From there, it offers views of Mjær and large parts of Ytre Enebakk.

Getting There and Other Destinations

Bus route 550 runs from central Oslo via Mortensrud along the western side of Østmarka to Enebakk Church. Route 350 runs from Enebakk Church via Flateby and Fjerdingby to Lillestrøm. If you choose your accommodation based on the planned focus of your stay, these routes can help you plan your journey and get around the area.

Other destinations to consider are Bærum, Ski, Rælingen, Fet, Eidsvoll, Frogn and Aurskog-Høland.
