Landscape and Trails

Landgoed Geerestein is a private estate covering approximately 170 hectares in the municipality of Woudenberg, at the foot of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The paths and avenues on the estate that are open to the public can be used for walking from sunrise to sunset. The estate includes ten Rijksmonumenten, including a castle, a landscaped park and four buildings of cultural and historical significance. This brings together landscape features and architectural heritage within a compact area.

The landscape is also the main attraction at Henschotermeer. Henschotermeer is a recreational area in the middle of the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, where visitors can walk around the lake. At the lake, the Oude Poffertjeskraam serves traditional Dutch poffertjes made according to an artisanal recipe.

Several hiking trails pass through different types of landscape. The Oudenhorsterpad is a 7.5-kilometre circular hiking trail that starts at Partycentrum Schimmel in Woudenberg. The route follows unpaved paths, agricultural land and historic tracks wherever possible. The de Marmontberg hiking trail is 4.6 kilometres long and runs through the forest and past the Pyramide van Austerlitz. The Termatenpad also passes through forests and past estates, offering an insight into local history.

Culture and History

The Pyramide van Austerlitz stands on one of the highest points of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It was built in 1804 as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte. After climbing the 81 steps, visitors can enjoy views across the surrounding area. The site also includes a large playground and a fairground with bumper cars, carousels and a small railway.

Grebbelinie in 't Vizier focuses on the history of the region. The site features an exhibition as well as an educational and information centre about how freedom was fought for in the Woudenberg, Scherpenzeel and Renswoude region during the Second World War. Visitors can walk through a trench and view a casemate up close. Guided tours of the trench, casemate and bunker at Grebbelinie in 't Vizier are available by appointment only.

The Oudheidkamer Woudenberg offers another historical perspective. It displays antique objects in changing exhibitions. Its permanent exhibitions include “Reis door de tijd”, a school classroom and a living room. The Oudheidkamer also has a research room with numerous reference works.

Routes on Two Wheels

The Kinderroute Woudenberg en Austerlitz is a child-friendly themed route along the cycle route network. It follows the junctions of this network, which are marked with white-and-green signs.

Pannenkoekenhuis Bergzicht has a large car park as well as several charging stations for electric bicycles or electric mobility scooters.

Events in Woudenberg

The events calendar also has its own highlights. Haantjesdag has been held in Woudenberg every second Saturday in June since 1986. Proef Woudenberg is one of the events held annually in Woudenberg. Both dates are therefore established as recurring features of the local events calendar.
