Eemnes is characterised by its open polder landscape. The historic village centre of Eemnes-Buiten lies within the listed villagescape of Eemnes-Buiten, around the Nederlands Hervormde kerk. The “Ned. Hervormde Kerk” at Wakkerendijk 49 in Eemnes is a Late Gothic building whose tower was added around 1500. Eemnes-Binnen mainly consists of several farmhouses along the Wakkerendijk.

Culture

An important historic site is Gemaal Eemnes, founded in 1883. It played an important role in the history of Eemnes and in draining the surrounding area. The restored building still contains the old pumps, drives, auxiliary equipment and electrical installations; one of the pumps remains operational. The Gemaal Eemnes and Eemnessersluis water-management complex is regarded as a culturally and historically significant, comparatively well-preserved ensemble consisting of a pumping station and lock in the Noordpolder te Veld, on the Eemnesser Vaart, with links to the Buitenvaart and the River Eem.

The Oudheidkamer is an exhibition and documentation centre about the history of Eemnes. A new exhibition can be viewed there approximately every six months. Monumentaal Eemnes additionally provides information about special places and buildings in Eemnes, historical descriptions, and current and historic photographs. A cycling route called Monumentaal Eemnes is available at the Oudheidkamer, the library and the town hall.

Temporary cultural events also form part of the character of the town. The ninth Eemnes art route, Een Dijk van Kunst en Cultuur, took place in 2025 at 23 surprising locations along the Wakkerendijk and the Meentweg. In this edition, 34 visual artists from Eemnes exhibited their work. The event also includes performances by musicians, poets and dancers.

Landscape and nature

Eemnes is a place characterised by polder landscapes, with numerous farmhouses and nature areas. Eemland preserves medieval dykes and plots in an open, protected peat pasture landscape. The Eempolders are an example of medieval peat drainage and cultivation. Since 2008, Eemland has been part of Nationaal Landschap Arkemheen-Eemland.

The Eemnes polder, with its numerous kolks, is a geoscientific monument and can be visited on foot and by bicycle via the Zomerdijk. In spring, numerous birds can be observed along the Nesserpad in flooded meadow plots known as plas-dras areas.

Hiking and cycling

The Nesserpad is a hiking trail through the open Eemland polder landscape of Eemnes. It passes farmhouses and dykes, as well as the winding Zomerdijk along the Eem, and offers route lengths of 6 km and 11 km. Another hiking route, the Eemland hiking route, follows the medieval Meentdijk and Zomerdijk dykes. Along the way, it allows a detour to a birdwatching hut on the Eemmeer, from which many waterbirds can be observed.

For cycling, in addition to Monumentaal Eemnes, there is also the Doortraproute Eemnes. This route starts and ends at the TOP car park of Theetuin Eemnes at Meentweg 131. The starting point is therefore clearly identified, while Monumentaal Eemnes brings together historical information, special places and buildings.

Local highlights and events

At Huis van Eemnes, Rondje Cultuur takes place on the third Thursday of every month, featuring art, culture, stories and music. Huis van Eemnes also offers a theatre, a library, workshops, lectures and a brasserie. For bicycles, it has a large bicycle parking area with several charging stations for electric bicycles.

Another local address is Theetuin Eemnes | Brave Hendrik. High tea is offered there. Theetuin includes a garden with seating, a tea house, furnished greenhouses and an adventure playground. In its own vegetable garden, Theetuin Eemnes | Brave Hendrik also grows the forgotten vegetable Brave Hendrik, which is related to chard and spinach.
