Landscape and trails

The Salmsteke recreational area is located on Lekdijk Oost in Lopik and covers 22 hectares. The site includes a tidal channel, a swimming lake, a new boat ramp, cycling and hiking trails, a car park, seasonal toilets, a play area with play equipment, a beach volleyball court and picnic tables. Salmsteke is also a “Toeristisch Overstappunt” with information about the surrounding area as well as cycling and hiking routes; there is a car park for arriving by car.

The Benedeneindsepad runs through a water-rich cultural and historical agricultural landscape in the border area of Lopik, Montfoort and Oudewater. Along the way are a cable ferry, views of natural lakes, and opportunities to observe hares and waterfowl. The trail starts at Pannenkoekenhuis Midden Op ‘t Landt in Benschop; the Jacobabrug bus stop in Benschop provides a connection to public transport.

Lopik has a numbered hiking network for shorter and longer walks. Orange signs with blue arrows point from one junction to the next. The landscape can also be explored by bicycle on many routes, including along the Lekdijk, with views of the river and floodplains, and between farms and meadows.

Water and cycling tours

At Recreatie Landschap Rosenboom in Benschop, canoes and electric whisper boats are rented for exploring the polder. Two canoe routes of different lengths complement this offering: a 14.3-kilometre route starts at a car park near Polsbroek on Slangeweg in Vlist, while an 18.2-kilometre route starts at Rosenboom Recreatie in Benschop.

The “De Overkant” bicycle and pedestrian ferry connects Ameide and Lopik across the Lek. It operates from mid-April until October and is intended for pedestrians and cyclists.

Culture and history

The Cabauwse Molen, also known as Middelste Molen, is a polder windmill built in 1773 with a preserved 19th-century interior. When the blue pennant or flag is raised, it can be visited free of charge, almost every Saturday from approximately 11:00 to 17:00. Groups can be received by appointment.

The Omroep Zender Museum presents the history of technology. It is located in the cold cellar of the monumental Zendstation dating from 1940 and displays broadcasting technology from the 1930s through more recent digital variants. The museum in Lopikerkapel can be visited by prior appointment; a visit includes an introduction and a guided tour lasting approximately two to three hours.

Natuurmuseum De Wielewaal displays painted landscapes as well as a collection of stuffed birds and animals illustrating the diversity and vulnerability of nature in the Groene Hart. De Wielewaal combines the natural history museum with a clog shop, a walk through the garden and a terrace offering drinks and homemade specialities.

Buitenplaats Huis te Jaarsveld is a private estate classified under the Dutch NSW scheme and has special cultural and historical, landscape and natural value. Part of the grounds is open during the day for quiet walks on designated paths.

The Dijkhuis complex includes a visitor centre about the historic dike warden as well as the “Dijkhuis en Waterbeheer” exhibition. The Dijkhuis was once the office of the Hoogheemraadschap Lekdijk Benedendams and served as a command post for monitoring the dikes during floods. Guided tours are offered there on Saturdays and Sundays.

Gardens and regional products

The Inspiratietuin Cabauw is located next to the H. Jacobuskerk in Cabauw and is open from sunrise to sunset. It has a self-service coffee corner offering coffee and tea, as well as benches and picnic tables.

Culinary specialities in Lopik include farm shops and farms selling their own products. These include Lopiker cheese, fruit sold directly at the farms and fresh farm ice cream.
