The audio walk through the Lopikerwaard conveys the present and past of water management. Its route passes a former court site and leads through characteristic peatland cultural landscapes. This allows it to combine the experience of the landscape with regional history, without requiring the two subjects to be considered separately.

The Kerkepad Route is a 14 km-long walking route and takes about four hours; approximately 20 percent of the route is unpaved. Its length, duration and surface make it a longer walk with varying trail conditions.

The Klavertje van Polsbroek consisted of four walking routes measuring 8.6 km, 6.1 km, 7.7 km and 5.9 km. Two routes therefore remain under 7 km, while the two longer options reach 7.7 km and 8.6 km.

Water management, farms and churches in Polsbroek

Just before Polsbroek, the “Waterknoop” is located on Slangeweg. Several waterways with different water levels pass over and under one another there. The special interplay of the waterways makes the site a concrete example of the region’s water-shaped surroundings.

Noordzijdseweg 183 also represents the village’s older built heritage. The farmhouse dates from the 17th century and has a thatched hipped roof. Inside, a flood floor, authentic beam ceilings and an 18th-century fireplace have still been preserved. This means that several architectural features from different periods are concentrated in a single farmhouse.

The tower of the Ned. Herv. Kerk in Polsbroek is also part of the village’s history. Parts of the tower date from around 1300, and it was raised in the 15th century. The brick hall church of the Ned. Kerk was built in 1834 after the old church was demolished. The tower and church building therefore represent different construction periods within the same ecclesiastical history.

Castles, historic sites and islands in the surrounding region

In the wider region around Polsbroek are Kasteel IJsselstein and Kasteel Batenstein; both are castles. Slot Loevestein is also located in this wider region and is likewise a castle. The Roman Watchtower is situated there as a historic site. These destinations complement the local architectural history with additional historical themes in the region.

Vogelpark Avifauna is a zoo in the wider region around Polsbroek. The zoo represents a separate area of interest alongside the castles and walking routes.
