Nieuwegein combines historic fortifications, waterways, nature reserves, art and urban culture within a compact thematic area. Between Fort Jutphaas, Vreeswijk, the Oudegein Estate and diverse walking and cycling routes, a destination emerges that showcases history not only in buildings, but also along canals, locks and park paths.
Culture and history
Fort Jutphaas is located in a green setting with historic monuments. Visitors can walk or run by the water and cross two bridges to reach the fort and see the historic monuments there. The fort is located in Nieuwegein and is part of the New Dutch Water Line, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021.
In the historic centre of Vreeswijk, a walk leads past old locks and ships. Museumwerf Vreeswijk restores, repairs and maintains historic inland vessels; it also offers boat trips on the Vaartse Rijn, the Merwedekanaal and the Doorslag. The present-day Fort Vreeswijk dates from 1855 and, together with the fortification rampart, was an important part of the New Dutch Water Line. Rijnhuizen Castle dates back approximately to 1637 and is one of the few castles in Nieuwegein that have survived to this day.
Urban culture can be experienced at the DE KOM city theatre and arts centre in Nieuwegein. There, visitors can enjoy productions and theatre performances. “Jong Erfgoed” offers a different perspective on the city’s more recent history: the 5-kilometre city walk leads to Nieuwegein’s valuable post-1965 heritage and to notable architecture from the period between 1965 and 1990.
Nature and water
Natuurkwartier is located in Oudegein Park and combines nature and culture. Its attractions include a Kabouterpad and a nature playground. Natuurkwartier can be reached on foot from the “Doorslag” light rail stop in just under 10 minutes; a light rail service frequently runs there from Utrecht towards IJsselstein. At Natuurkwartier, POM Buiten prepares fresh food every day, using as many products from the surrounding area as possible.
The Oudegeinse Poldermolen is also part of the area’s landscape history. The wind-driven drainage mill is open to visitors every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon. Visitors are also welcome at other times when it is operating. It is looked after by three volunteer millers.
The Oudegein Estate combines a Renaissance layout with straight avenues bordered by ditches, rectangular plots, orchards and pastures, as well as a landscaped park suitable for walks. Birds can be observed all year round along the avenues and waterways. Walking and cycling routes in Nieuwegein also run along the Lek.
Routes and cityscapes
“Sprekende Beelden” is a 9-kilometre cycling or walking route through Nieuwegein. It passes eleven artworks from the collection of Buitenmuseum Nieuwegein. At each artwork along the route, QR codes lead to stories about the artworks. In this way, the route combines movement through the city with individual stops at the art collection.
The Street Art Route can also be explored on foot or by bicycle and passes fourteen locations with murals. The Street Art cycling route in Nieuwegein is approximately 10 kilometres long. Those interested in older traces can follow the “Speurpad Nieuwegein Eeuwenoud” through the Het Klooster nature reserve to archaeological finds made there over the past ten years. Along the “Speurpad Nieuwegein Eeuwenoud”, QR codes explain the stories behind the artworks.
Experiences
Down Under offers indoor bodyboarding for children aged 8 and over under the guidance of instructors. The Kinderboerderij IJsselstee is a destination centred around animals. It is located in the outbuildings of the historic farm of the same name and houses a diverse collection of small domestic animals. The Kinderboerderij also has a playground, and the animals are fed daily at around 3:00 p.m.
