Baarn – Holiday apartment between forest, culture and hiking trails

Baarn combines forest landscapes, historic country estates and trails with clearly specified distances. The Baarnse Bos was created around De Eult as a star-shaped forest. De Vuursche is a large woodland area on an Ice Age ridge between Baarn, Soest, Maartensdijk and Hilversum; the village of Lage-Vuursche lies at its centre. Many cycling and walking trails lead towards this village. Lage Vuursche is one of the few castle villages in the Netherlands, with numerous former farmhouses lining the central Dorpsstraat.

Nature and trails

The Boswachterspad Stulp en Kasteeltuinroute is a 6-kilometre hiking trail. Its starting point is at the car park near the Kuil van Drakensteyn in Lage Vuursche. In winter, a great grey shrike can be spotted on the Stulpse Heide. From a viewpoint along the route, there is a view of the Pluismeer and its waterfowl.

Other routes also lead through this area. The NS De Vuursche walking route can be shortened to 9 kilometres by taking bus route 59 from the Lage Vuursche (Dorp) stop to Hilversum or Den Dolder station. The De Vuursche mobility scooter route is 15 kilometres long, runs entirely along a cycle path and can be shortened to create shorter routes. Bicycles can be rented at Baarn station.

The Historische Kring Baerne offers ten walks in and around Baarn and Lage Vuursche. Their lengths range from 3.5 to 15.5 kilometres. The walks were reviewed again in 2022 and 2023; the revised versions are available with GPX files.

Culture and history

Groeneveld Castle is an 18th-century country estate in Baarn and an example of an 18th-century country house. The building was constructed around 1710 in the Rococo style. Groeneveld’s programme includes exhibitions, concerts, debates and educational activities. The park and kitchen garden of Groeneveld Castle are also accessible for walks outside opening hours. Grand Café Groeneveld serves coffee, tea and lunch made with organic regional produce.

Paleis Soestdijk and the surrounding estate are a state-protected monument, originally built in the 17th century. Cantonspark now serves as a public park and has cultural-historical value because of its history of creation and development. Rare trees grow in the park, including the handkerchief tree (Davidia involucrata), the dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) and the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum).

Museums, churches and open venues

The Scouting Nederland Museum has a permanent exhibition and a temporary exhibition every year. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free. The Oudheidkamer in Baarn is open to everyone. At the Brink, the Pauluskerk is open to the public every day. Visitors may enter to view the building, meditate or pray.

The Oude Begraafplaats is open on Open Monuments Day, and a guided tour is also offered. Occasional open-air performances take place in the music pavilion of the Pekingtuin. Alongside the forest trails and country estates, this provides access to smaller cultural venues and events in the Baarn area.

TOP De Generaal is a starting point in Baarn for hiking, cycling and boating. There is an area map and parking facilities there. TOP De Generaal is located in a historic railway station building overlooking the Baarnse Bos. Paleis Soestdijk, the Naald van Waterloo and Landgoed Groeneveld are in the immediate vicinity.

The “Highlights Baarn” walking route starts at TOP Kasteel Groeneveld and passes TOP Paleis Soestdijk. For further local connections, Lage-Vuursche and Baarn form the immediate destination area.
