Vilsteren reveals its special features where landscape, paths and buildings come together. The present-day landscape of Vilsteren is a mixture of an esdorp landscape and an estate landscape. Heathland, a watercourse, the estate, church and folly represent different forms of landscape and architecture in Vilsteren.

Walking routes through the estate

Vilsteren Estate has five walking routes with different themes and lengths. The routes include a map, directions and information about the sights along the way. The different lengths allow for different time frames for a walk or a longer day of walking; the themes each focus on different aspects. This means the route can remain focused on a single highlight or connect several places on the estate. For planning the day, route length and thematic focus are two important details. The map and directions support the selection, while the different themes further define the focus of the routes. Several stops can also be included within a day of walking on the estate.

Stikkebelt was created in 2001 on the southern side of the heathland as a viewing hill, precisely at the end of a sightline from the country estate. The site is therefore part of the designed landscape of the estate. From the Kurkentrekker, you look towards the Vecht. The Vecht forms the northern boundary of the estate; however, the visible water is not the Vecht itself, but an old cut-off branch of the Vecht. The southern heathland and the northern boundary along the Vecht also give the estate two different directions.

Church, Folly and Village Life

The Sint Willibrorduskerk was built between 1896 and 1897 as a neo-Gothic pseudo-basilica with a 40-metre-high tower. The Cremers Chapel is attached to the south side of the church at altar level. The construction period from 1896 to 1897 falls in the late 19th century. The construction period, church form and attached chapel shape the appearance of this church building.

The Kluizenaarshut is a good example of a so-called “folly” in the style of English landscape design. From the Theekoepel, there is a beautiful view of the village across the Molen Es. Both features add special architectural and landscape impressions to the walk. Visitors are warmly welcome at Vilsteren Estate. The Vilsteren Boerenmarkt takes place on the third Saturday of every month. This regular schedule brings a recurring market day to village life in Vilsteren. If you would like to include market activity in your travel plans, this regular date can be a separate reason for choosing your travel period. The monthly date is a specific reference point for travel planning if the Boerenmarkt is to be part of your stay.

Vilsteren Campsite is a campsite in the woods, located about 400 metres southeast of the village.
