Arriën between the Vecht and the Esdorp Landscape

Arriën is one of the subareas of the Vechtdal nature region and was originally an esdorp, a village surrounded by communal arable land. The arable complexes of Arriën lie on the higher Es between the Vecht and the village. The lower-lying marsh soils along the Vecht near Arriën are grassland. The higher arable complexes and the grassland along the Vecht therefore alternate in elevation and land use.

Hiking Trails with Different Route Formats

The 6 km Ommen (Arrien) hiking route starts in Arriën. It follows the Vecht, heathland, woodland and fields. The starting point is at Ridderinkweg 1, 7735 KG Arriën. There is a car park at Ridderinkweg, and from the starting point hikers follow the orange arrows of the hiking trail network. For a day of hiking on a limited scale, 6 km is a specific distance to plan for. The Vecht is both part of the landscape and a section of the route. The shorter route brings together four landscape elements in six kilometres, connecting the Vecht, heathland, woodland and fields along a single trail. The Groene Route covers 8.7 kilometres as a circular route; its flat, almost entirely paved surface is another distinct aspect to consider when planning. Both routes start in Arriën, but differ in length, format and trail surface. On the Ommen route, the orange arrows mark the way from the starting point.

The 8.7 km Groene Route also starts in Arriën and forms a circular route. It is flat and almost entirely paved. Compared with the 6 km route, it is longer; at the same time, it differs in its circular layout and the trail surface described above. When planning a day out, its length, circular layout and trail surface can all be taken into account together.

Koeland: Floodplain Meadows, Grasslands and Birds

The floodplain meadows of Arriën can withstand extreme drought, but they are also regularly flooded. Extreme drought and regular flooding are therefore features of the same landscape area.

The Arriër Koeland is home to species-rich grasslands with maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides) and lady's bedstraw (Galium verum). There is a birdwatching hut at the Koeland in the surrounding area, from which birds can be observed.

Arriërveld and the History at Brinkweg

Arriërveld, north of Arriën, was formerly an extensive heathland area belonging to Arriën's communal marken lands. Routes run through the Arriërveld woodland complex. The former heathland and today's routes thus represent different periods in the history of the same landscape name.

A memorial panel at Brinkweg in Arriën commemorates the former Arriën Jewish labour camp. Brinkweg connects this historical reference with a specific place within Arriën.

RozemArrie and Strawberry Growing

RozemArrie is a strawberry farm in the hamlet of Arriën. The Rozema family has been growing strawberries there since 2007.
