Holiday apartment in Stegeren: trails along the Vecht and history

Stegeren combines forest trails, the Vecht and impressive traces of the past. The village originally developed as an esdorp, a traditional farming settlement. The Stegerveld also tells the story of a different landscape: it was once an extensive heathland and peatland area where sheep grazed and peat was cut. The Boswachterspad Arriër-Esch starts at Café Restaurant De Bootsman, Coevorderweg 19, 7737 PE Stegeren. Five hiking trails start from Stegeren; their starting point is at Coevorderweg 19. One of them is the yellow route from Stegeren: this 4.7 km, flat circular trail runs mostly through the forest on unpaved ground and partly follows the Wolfveldseweg and the Stegerdijk. The different trail lengths make it easier to adapt your day's plans to the distance you want to cover.

The scattered farmsteads also give the local landscape its structure. They are connected by the Stegerdijk; near the farm ’n Oeverdincken, the road ends in a large loop. There is no public transport stop near Café Restaurant De Bootsman.

Discover the Vecht landscape and Junner Koeland

The Stuwenroute crosses the Vecht at the weir between Junne and Stegeren. At the hamlet of Stegeren, this route can be extended with an approximately 3 km circular trail through the former esdorp and across the centuries-old meadows along the Vecht. This makes both the waterside landscape and the historic settlement and pastureland central to the excursion.

Junner Koeland lies between the hamlets of Arriën, Junne and Stegeren. Today, it is a nature reserve of approximately 100 hectares managed by Staatsbosbeheer. There is a 10 km hiking trail and a shorter 2.5 km walk. The approximately 3 km route to Junner Koeland starts at the Stegerdijk in Stegeren. More than 70 breeding bird species live in the nature reserve; they are best observed from a birdwatching hut.

Historical traces in the landscape

Dozens of prehistoric burial mounds are still visible in the landscape around Stegeren. Staatsbosbeheer restored the burial mounds at Calsum in 1999. Another memorial site is the resistance monument in Stegeren. It commemorates the Vroomshoop resistance group Salland, which used a drop zone called “Evert” near the village from August 1944 onward. Approximately fourteen airdrops took place near Stegeren during the war. The monument depicts the silhouettes of an aircraft, parachutes and military personnel.
