Hengelo combines technology and art with traces of cultural history, green landscapes, and routes for cyclists and hikers. Between museums, historic buildings, markets, and the rural area of Beckum, the city reveals its many different facets.

Culture

The Museum Hengelo provides a searchable digital database of museum objects and documents. The museum also presents Hengelo’s culture and history through a unique cultural-historical collection. The Oyfo Techniekmuseum explores the interactive connection and interplay between people, creativity, and technology. Oyfo offers activities, exhibitions, courses, and educational projects on cultural heritage, technology, and various art forms. The museum is a ten-minute walk from Hengelo NS railway station.

Cultural impressions can also be found beyond the museums. The Street Art Route leads to the finest artworks in Hengelo city centre. In Tuindorp 't Lansink, Coenrad Frederik Stork, known as C.F., was particularly responsible for implementing the settlement’s plan in 1910. Oele has had a watermill since 1334. The Watermolen Oele offers guided tours about the history of the mill, suitable for all age groups.

Cycling

The F35 cycle superhighway runs from Nijverdal via Wierden, Almelo, Borne, and Hengelo to Enschede. The completed sections include the connection between Hengelo and Enschede. The Rondje Hengelo cycling route runs through the green, varied landscape around Hengelo. In addition, the Fietsnetwerk Twente consists of a chain of numbered junctions; there are many of these in and around Hengelo, which can be used for cycling through the countryside.

Another route combines exercise with remembrance: the Oorlogsmonumentenroute passes places and monuments in Hengelo connected with the war.

Nature

Weusthagpark in Hengelo covers 200 hectares. The Heemtuin Weusthag showcases landscape features and plants that are or were characteristic of Twente. The walk in Weusthag follows good paths and is also suitable for people with reduced mobility.

In the rural area of Beckum, the historic “Maurits en Napoleon” walking route covers 5 km. Another walking loop near Beckum passes old farmhouses, ash trees, pastures, and woodland edges with beautiful views.

History

The Lambertusbasiliek was built from 1888 to 1890 according to a design by G. te Riele, on the site of an earlier building. Its design was inspired by late Lower Rhine Gothic. The Lambertuskerk was largely spared during the bombing of Hengelo in the Second World War. The tower has 59 bells that can play music together to form a carillon.

City and Routes
