Holiday apartment in Tubbergen: Discover nature, culture and trails

From clear spring ponds and limestone-rich water to watermills, stained glass and regional festivals, Tubbergen reveals many different facets. Nature, culture and various trails shape the character of the landscape.

Nature

The Dal van de Mosbeek is designated as a protected Natura 2000 site. Its limestone-rich water supports rare plants such as ragged-robin, heath spotted-orchid, orchids, marsh gentian and butterwort. In this area, visitors can hike across the heath, rest by springs and streams, and listen to black woodpeckers.

The Manderheide is also designated as a Natura 2000 site because of its value for biodiversity and is part of the European network of natural areas. The hills of Braamberg, Kuiperberg and Kersberg, as well as Weusthag Park, are also located in the vicinity of Tubbergen.

Trails

The Springendal Bronnenroute is 4.7 kilometres long. It runs along babbling streams, clear spring ponds, fields and hay meadows. The route follows winding paths, some of them reinforced with wooden walkways, and passes through beech avenues. Themed routes lead past natural areas, cultural heritage and centuries-old farmhouses, offering opportunities to observe rare birds and plants.

Tubbergen offers a wide range of cycling, hiking, mountain biking, horse-riding and carriage-driving routes. The Boswachterspad Springendal starts at the Brandtoren car park, Brandtorenweg 4 in Hezingen, and can be reached by car via the N349. The nearest bus stop to this trail is De Roezenberg in Vasse; from there, it is a 30-minute walk to the starting point.

Orientation

The IJs & Es Information Centre is open during the opening hours of the adjoining restaurant, serves as a starting point for excursions and offers free admission. The information centre has a car park and toilets. Visitors can learn more there about the origins of Noordoost-Twente and the source of the Mosbeek, including the area’s geological development and the subsequent human influence on it.

Culture

The Watermolen van Frans, a historic overshot watermill, stands in Mander. It includes a pair of millstones powered by water and an information and exhibition room in the mill building. The historic Herinckhave estate in Fleringen has retained its structure well. It comprises a main building, parkland, two farm buildings, a watermill, bridges, gates and garden ornamentation.

The Sint-Pancratius Basilica in Tubbergen has 35 stained-glass windows. They were created by artists from five generations of the Nicolas family. The basilica is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. At the Fleringer Es, beneath the Kroezeboom, a several-hundred-year-old tree with a small chapel, it is possible to get married outdoors.
