Holiday apartment in Dinkelland between nature and cultural experiences

Dinkelland combines protected landscapes, historic sites, special museums, and trails through the Dutch-German border region. In Dinkelland, nature observation, regional history, outdoor activities, and local specialities come together.

Nature

Bergvennen & Brecklenkampse Veld form a Natura 2000 landscape where open heathland, woodland, small bodies of water, and flower-rich grasslands alternate. Several hiking trails cross this area; from a birdwatching hut, visitors can observe the water.

The Dinkelland Natura 2000 area also includes Punthuizen, Stroothuizen, and Beuninger Achterveld. These areas feature heathland and rare bluegrass meadows. The Springendal hike offers another experience of the landscape: the approximately 10-kilometre route leads through a nature reserve covering around 355 hectares, with clear, flowing water moving downhill through numerous streams.

Trails

There are many well-maintained cycling and hiking trails in Ootmarsum, Denekamp, Weerselo, and everywhere in between. The 8-kilometre Hugopad hike starts at Tourist Info/Boekhandel Brummelhuis in the centre of Denekamp, heads towards Beuningen, and then follows the Dinkel.

The Alte KanalAllee nature tour follows the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal through the Dutch-German border region. By bicycle, it passes a nostalgic customs house, an 18th-century peat barge, and the oldest aqueduct in the Netherlands. The approximately 26-kilometre Watermolenroute leads to the watermills around the Mosbeek Valley and through the natural landscape around Ootmarsum and Springendal.

Culture

The Open Air Museum Ootmarsum is located directly on the edge of the centre of Ootmarsum, in the municipality of Dinkelland. In 16 authentic buildings typical of the region, visitors learn how farmers lived in the Twente region in earlier times.

Landgoed Singraven also combines landscape and history. The estate was first mentioned in 1381 as the agricultural farmstead „Hof ten Singraven“ and covers around 500 hectares. More than half of it is woodland; the remainder consists mainly of agricultural land and nature. The Dinkel contributes to the diversity of the landscape, and the estate can be explored on foot or by bicycle via designated routes.

The park of Landgoed Singraven is open exclusively to walkers. The estate includes a water-powered sawmill. During the summer months, volunteer millers set the wheels in motion and offer visitors a glimpse inside the watermill. Guided tours of the manor convey more than 800 years of history and are available for groups of eight to 40 people.

Museums and experiences

Museum Natura Docet in Denekamp is considered the oldest regional natural history museum in the Netherlands. The first Museum Natura Docet was established in 1911 in Bernink’s childhood home. Today, the museum has an extensive permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions, and a programme of workshops, lectures, and hikes.

Museum Natura Docet is easily accessible by car and public transport. The nearest named bus stop is Oranjestraat, and free parking is also available. Another excursion destination offering individually tailored guided tours is Cosmos Sterrenwacht Twente. The programme is aimed at individual visitors, families, groups, and school classes and takes place during the day as well as in the evening.

Regional specialities

In Ootmarsum, Othmar brews traditionally crafted beer in copper kettles at Gasterij Oatmössche. At Othmar’s tasting room, guided beer tastings and High Beer experiences are offered.
