The Roderveld nature reserve near Oldenzaal contains deciduous and coniferous forests as well as wet heathland with plants and animals. Two marked circular trails start at the car park at Het Everloo: one is 1 kilometre long and the other 3.5 kilometres. The different distances help you plan your hiking day to suit your needs. The former railway connection between Oldenzaal and Denekamp is now a hiking trail in Roderveld. At Havezathe het Everlo in Volthe, you can follow marked hiking trails from the car park there. A hike through the open field landscape in Volthe can begin at Partycentrum Hutten or Kulturhus Rabo de CoCeR. At the southwestern edge of Rossum, a hiking trail runs through a landscaped area in the hamlet of Lemselo, from which the church tower of Rossum can occasionally be seen.

The Hunenborg and Rossum’s church history

The Hunenborg is a ringwork castle dating from around 1050 and consists of wooded remains of a main castle and an outer bailey that is barely visible today. It is part of the AVAV Natura 2000 site (Achter de Voort, Agelerbroek en Voltherbroek), which is rich in purple moor-grass meadows, swamp forests and small bodies of water.

The St Plechelmus Church in Rossum is a cruciform church made of yellow machine-made bricks, with a hipped gabled roof covered with red Roman roof tiles. Rossum’s Roman Catholic church was built around 1940, and the church in Rossum has stained-glass windows. Near the church entrance is the Mariagrot, a place of devotion inaugurated by Pastor H. Thijert in early October 1990. A Calvary monument was erected in Rossum cemetery in 1909.

Further historical details can be found just outside the village: The roadside cross on Boschweg was erected in 1939 beside a mighty oak tree about half a kilometre outside Rossum, on the edge of an open field. A restored Tuffelkeller, a semi-underground storage building, stands just outside the village on Everlostraat. Rossum’s Kroezeboom on Boschweg is a resting place during a cycling tour.

The Hilligenpad is a seven-day contemplative trail through the landscape of Twente. The third day of the trail begins at Kanaalweg Noordzijde 1, 7596 Rossum, near the Hunenborg, and leads from Rossum via the Dal van de Mosbeek to Tubbergen. For a longer day on the bicycle, the approximately 39-kilometre Z-Fietsen route Beuningen en De Lutte is a good option: it leads from Rossum via Beuningen, the Lutterzand and De Lutte, and back to Rossum.
