Churches, mills and historic houses

The Sint Nicolaaskerk is a single-nave church dating from the 13th to the 15th century. Its eastern extension was built in 1912 to a design by the architect Wolter te Riele. The nave is made of Bentheim sandstone and is covered by ribbed cross vaults. The bells in the Denekamp Sint Nicolaas Tower are rung manually. This uninterrupted tradition began in the first half of the 16th century.

The mills and historic houses also give Denekamp special themes for an outing. The Watermolen Singraven is the last undershot wooden water-powered sawmill in the Netherlands. Huis Singraven includes rooms in the style of Louis XV and Louis XVI, as well as an exceptional art and antiques collection; tours take place accompanied by a guide. In the adjacent coach house of Huize Keizer, archaeological objects are displayed that are connected to the history told on the upper floor. Museum Huize Keizer is located in a historically restored shop and residence from the 1920s, restored both inside and out, in the centre of Denekamp.

The Dinkel, country estate and paths through the landscape

Landgoed Singraven encompasses forests, avenues, fields, meadows, wetlands and the Dinkel. Near Denekamp, the historic Schuivenhuisje carries the Dinkel beneath the Almelo–Nordhorn Canal. The 13-kilometre Singravenwandeling runs across the estate, past the Schuivenhuisje and along the Dinkel.

For an active day, Landgoed Singraven also offers a water walk lasting about an hour. It can be downloaded to a smartphone and explains the importance and use of water on the estate. The route “Denekamp: (h)eerlijk fietsen” starts at Fox Restaurant Lodges in Denekamp and follows numbered cycle junctions along paved cycle paths.

Natural history museum and local traditions

Natura Docet is a natural history museum presenting animals, plants, geology and biodiversity. Tours are led by the curator or another guide. Natura Docet can be reached on foot in a few minutes from the Oranjestraat bus stop; the stop is served by bus route 62 from Enschede and Oldenzaal.

The bell-ringing tradition in the Denekamp Sint Nicolaas Tower takes place around Christmas, New Year, Easter, King’s Day, Pentecost, the arrival of Sinterklaas and the feast day of Saint Nicholas on 5 and 6 December. A permanent overview exhibition about the tower and its bells is set up and maintained on the first floor of the tower. The Easter customs in Denekamp are organised every year by an informal local community and were already taking place under the leadership of Judas and Iscariot in 1894.

The Borgelinkmolen can regularly be seen turning and milling, and it welcomes visitor groups in its educational building. The mill also houses an exhibition with old millstones, hand tools and agricultural equipment, as well as numerous types of grain.
