Holiday apartment in Borne: Linen House, Churches and Cultural Routes

The Bussemakerhuis Museum gives Borne a distinctive cultural and historical profile: it is the only surviving linen trading house in the Netherlands and is in nearly original condition. The building was constructed in 1655 and remodelled in 1779 by the manufacturer Jan Bussemaker. The permanent exhibition explains the significance of linen today.

Culture and history

Several buildings from the 19th century have been preserved in Oud Borne. The district has been a protected townscape since 1991. The Pinksterbruidjes tradition is also part of the annual cycle in Borne: it continues every year on Whit Sunday.

The Bornse Synagogue was ceremonially inaugurated in 1843 and regularly focuses on the history of the synagogue and the former Jewish community in Borne. Its rooms host exhibitions, concerts, lectures and courses. Stolpersteine in front of former homes commemorate Borne’s Jewish residents.

Several churches preserve their own architectural and artistic characteristics. The Roman Catholic St. Stephanuskerk in Borne is a neo-Gothic Rijksmonument church built in 1888, with stained-glass windows and ribbed vaults. The Oude Kerk has wall paintings from the period shortly after its construction; its tower also houses an exhibition on the building history of the church. The Mariakapel stands on the site of a former cemetery.

Only two Klopjeswoningen have survived in Borne. A Klopjeswoning on the edge of Oud Borne dates partly from the 17th century; in 1786, an apartment was added specifically for a Klopje. In Hertme stands the H. Stephanuskerk, built in 1902–1903 according to a neo-Gothic design by the architect Wolter te Riele.

Trails and landscape

The Kloosterpad Zenderen is available in variants of 3, 5, 8 and 11 kilometres and can be walked every day. The route leads through forests and across fields, as well as through the Weleveld estate. A Kloosterpad hike is organised every two years, focusing on culture, history and religion.

The Rode Draad route is 3.9 kilometres long. It starts at Borne railway station and leads through Oud Borne. For longer cycling tours, the 58-kilometre Hulsbeek–De Lutte cycling route is signposted. The TOP in the centre of Borne is located at the railway station; from there, there is a connection to the regional cycling network.

Events and voices from the town

The Hertme Open-Air Theatre is set in green surroundings and has a medieval-style backdrop. It hosts concerts, children’s performances and the Africa Festival.

Borns Onderonsje is an audio walk through the streets of Oud Borne and Hertme. During the walk, residents of Borne talk about monuments and notable buildings. At the Spanjaardgemaal, visitors can press a button, look through viewing openings and watch a video about the area.
