Sint Maartensvlotbrug brings together historic waterways, seasonal flower fields and nature trails in distinctive local features. These include a pontoon bridge, windmills with a history of water management and a municipal monument. In addition, Land van Fluwel and Wildrijk represent blossom, landscape and special technical details. The canal, polder and dunes form distinct landscape areas.

Bridge and canal as defining features

The pontoon bridge of Sint Maartensvlotbrug is designated as a provincial monument. It is considered a rare surviving example of a construction type from 1953 based on the principle of the Vlotbrug that previously stood there. Jan Blanken Jansz. designed this earlier Vlotbrug in 1821 and 1822. Sint Maartensvlotbrug is one of the Vlotbruggen over the Noordhollandsch Kanaal that can now be used by pedestrians, cyclists and cars. Here, you can combine a historic construction principle with a crossing that is still in use.

Dairy and windmills

The former De Eensgezindheid dairy at Sint Maartensweg 5 in Sint Maartensvlotbrug is a municipal monument. The De Noorder M windmill drained the approximately 263-hectare N-M section of the Zijpe and Hazepolder into the Schermerboezem. The N-M windmill is also called Noorder-M and was built in 1657. The construction date of the N-M windmill, 1657, thus predates the construction type of the pontoon bridge from 1953 by a considerable margin.

Tulips, views and audio tour

Land van Fluwel provides a seasonal highlight. There, an 11-metre-high observation tower offers views over the surrounding flower bulb fields; the tulip display is particularly impressive in spring. At the Dutch Tulip Experience, the history of the tulip is presented through an audio tour. Every spring, Land van Fluwel and Bloeiend Zijpe jointly organise trips on the BloemBollenBoemel through the surrounding flower fields.

Wildrijk in Sint Maartenszee

Another facet can be found at Wildrijk in Sint Maartenszee. Wildrijk was originally a wooded country estate and was protected through purchase in 1940. A special scoop wheel mill at Wildrijk maintains the water level with the help of a so-called “schoonwatersloot”, or clean-water ditch, which supplies water directly from the dunes. Wildrijk has a walk lasting about an hour, particularly appealing in spring. The approximately one-hour walk provides a compact timeframe for planning the day.
