Discover Tilburg: culture, nature and holiday apartments
Tilburg combines museums, public cultural venues, water and natural areas with walking and cycling routes of varying lengths. Between the railway station, Piushaven, historic sites and the green outskirts of the city, there are numerous destinations where art, history, exercise and regional cuisine come together.
Culture
The city’s cultural focus is already evident around the railway station. Natuurmuseum Brabant is located opposite Tilburg railway station and the Centraal Station bus station; from there, it is a 200-metre walk to the museum. The “Ice Age!” exhibition takes visitors 12,000 years back to the last ice age. With “Expedition Discover”, the museum also offers a playful nature game through various museum galleries.
The TextielMuseum manages more than 26,000 objects from the fields of art, design and industrial heritage. At the same time, the museum brings together design, art, fashion, heritage and innovation in the field of textiles. Visitors to the TextielLab can watch designers, artists and architects working on new creations. A guided tour of the TextielLab introduces the available techniques of weaving, knitting, laser cutting, embroidery and tufting. The collection of the De Pont Museum includes more than 100 international artists and more than 1,000 works.
The LocHal is a public venue where learning, research, creative work, innovation, exhibitions and presentations come together. It is located directly behind Tilburg railway station and can be reached by public transport, car and bicycle.
History and events
Historical references are also part of the cityscape. In 1866, the young Vincent van Gogh received his first drawing lessons in Tilburg from Master Huijsmans. Around 1310, Huize Moerenburg was one of Tilburg’s first stone houses.
Every year, the Tilburgse Kermis takes over the city for ten days. Roze Maandag was first held in 1990 as part of the Tilburgse Kermis.
Nature and routes
Stadsbos013 is an extensive natural area on the outskirts of Tilburg and can be reached by bicycle from the city centre. Landschapspark Moerenburg lies on the south-eastern outskirts of Tilburg, has an agricultural character and serves an important function for nature and the landscape. Piushaven is directly connected to the greenery of Moerenburg and the water of the Wilhelmina Canal, making it suitable for walking and cycling.
At Piushaven, visitors can rent boats, take part in sightseeing cruises and book packages including food and drinks. Several routes are available for longer distances: the Kloosterrondwandeling starts and ends at Abdij Koningshoeven and is 11.5 kilometres long. The Van Gogh NP walking route Tilburg is 17.3 kilometres long and takes around four hours. The F261 express cycling route connects Tilburg with Loon op Zand, Kaatsheuvel, Waalwijk and Efteling.
The blue La Trappe cycling route is 51 kilometres long and passes through Tilburg, Hilvarenbeek and Esbeek. It begins with a visit to Abdij Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot, where La Trappe Trappist beer is brewed by monks.
Open space and exercise
Spoorpark is freely accessible during its opening hours. It can be reached in around five minutes on foot from Tilburg railway station and nearby bus stops. The park has a public urban sports area with a bowl, pump track and bouldering elements, as well as a public basketball court, chess tables and jeu-de-boules courts. Its water system includes a pond, a water plaza with fountains and a stream where children can play and adults can wade.
Food and drink
At Proeflokaal La Trappe on the outskirts of Tilburg, in green surroundings, visitors are welcomed for lunch or dinner. The venue uses organic products wherever possible, and its own abbey contributes to the cuisine. All La Trappe beers are developed and brewed at Abdij Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven in cooperation with the Trappists.
